- Qualified doctors remain essential despite advances in medical technology
- Investing in national medical cadres is key to better healthcare
- Al-Adan Hospital’s second Internal Medicine Conference highlights medical education, clinical research and the role of emerging technologies in improving patient care
Investing in and empowering national medical professionals through scientific and professional development remains a priority for strengthening Kuwait’s healthcare system and ensuring the sustainable delivery of medical services, Minister of Health Dr Ahmed Al-Awadhi said on Saturday.
Speaking at the opening of the second Internal Medicine Conference organised by Al-Adan Hospital, Al-Awadhi said scientific conferences and professional forums play an important role in building a culture of research and continuing medical education. They also provide doctors with opportunities to exchange expertise, discuss advances in diagnosis and treatment, and apply the latest medical knowledge in clinical practice.
The minister highlighted Al-Adan Hospital’s development over the past 45 years, noting that it began providing health services in 1980 before its official opening in 1981. He praised the expansion of the hospital and its Department of Internal Medicine, particularly the growth of subspecialties, modernisation of infrastructure and stronger integration between departments.
Al-Awadhi said the department had made significant advances in several areas, including clinical hematology, neurological conditions, stroke and movement disorders. It has also developed specialised clinics covering obesity, digestive and respiratory diseases, and geriatric care, while contributing to the development of clinical protocols and programmes for early detection and prevention.
Highlighting the rapid progress of precision medicine, digital technologies and artificial intelligence, the minister stressed that scientific gatherings were essential to connecting new knowledge with everyday medical practice. He said doctors must continue updating their skills to keep pace with advances that can improve diagnosis, treatment and the quality of patient care.
He emphasised, however, that technological progress cannot replace the expertise and clinical judgement of qualified doctors, describing their ability to make sound decisions as an indispensable foundation of healthcare. Dr Khalil Shweiker, head of the Internal Medicine Department at Al-Adan Hospital and chairman of the conference, said the event was being held for the second consecutive year.
He explained that the first edition was launched to provide doctors from different medical specialties with a platform to exchange experience and stay abreast of the latest developments in their fields. Shweiker added that scientific meetings extend beyond lectures and discussion sessions, creating opportunities for direct interaction among medical professionals and the sharing of practical clinical experience. Such exchanges, he said, can contribute directly to improving the standard of care provided to patients.
