(ANSA) - ROME, 22 OTT - The 500 paratroopers from the crack Folgore Brigade to be deployed in Milan after last weekend's shocking youth rioting will be able to use Lince armoured cars and drones to intervene very quickly in the event of street violence, Deputy Premier, Transport Minister and right-wing League party leader Matteo Salvini said Thursday.
"Milan will be under surveillance, as will its train stations.
Having 500 paratroopers from the Folgore Brigade—men with an average age of over 40 and extensive experience abroad—present in many of Milan's public squares provides a real sense of security. They will be able to help maintain public order, working alongside other law enforcement agencies. They can also intervene if necessary, using Lince vehicles, drones, and equipment suited for rapid response," stated Salvini at the Prefecture in Milan.
"They are trained to perform the duties expected of military personnel, all while strictly adhering to current regulations.
They are soldiers and will follow the law; they certainly won't be going around doing anything irregular," he added.
The soldiers will not have police powers as initially planned, following an objection from President Sergio Mattarella. (ANSA).
