By Zoila Palma: The Cayo Cancer Care Foundation, formerly the Belize Cancer Society – San Ignacio Branch, is inviting the public to participate in its first Annual Cancer Awareness Walk under its new name on Saturday, October 31.
The walk will begin at Running W at 5:30 a.m., with participants expected to make their way toward the Macal River Park, where refreshments and other activities will be available. The foundation is encouraging community members across Cayo to come out in support of cancer patients and its ongoing work.
To facilitate transportation, two buses will leave Benque Viejo del Carmen at 4:00 a.m. from BECOL Park, making stops in Succotz, San Ignacio, Santa Elena and Esperanza before reaching Running W. Stops in San Ignacio include the UNO gas station bus stop, Sacred Heart College bus stop, Hode’s Place and in front of the police station.
In Santa Elena, buses will stop in front of Public Works and at the Loma Luz bus stop, while the Esperanza stop will be near the community centre.
Participants are asked to contribute $2, which will be collected on the bus or at the Running W entrance. Water stops along the route will be sponsored by Jaguar Scouts, Belizean Queen Freight, the Rotary Club of San Ignacio, Let Them Eat Cake and Danielle Rodriguez.
Following the walk, participants will be treated to breakfast provided through contributions from foundation members and community supporters.
Breakfast will include meat pies, sandwiches, powder buns, johnny cakes and fresh fruit, while coffee, water, juices and snacks will also be available. Businesses supporting the event at Macal River Park include San Ignacio Resort Hotel, Big H, Santiago Castillo Ltd., Brodies and Vega’s Distributors. The foundation expressed gratitude to its sponsors and volunteers for helping make the event possible.
The foundation will also use the occasion to promote two fundraising activities.
Raffle tickets for a 55-inch Smart TV will be available for $25 each, with the draw scheduled for December 23.
Additionally, tickets will be sold for an 80’s Night Party set for Saturday, November 21, at The Log Cab-Inn Resort from 8:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. Tickets cost $50 and include complimentary finger foods and music, with a cash bar available. The foundation said it is facing a critical period for funding and is appealing to the public to support its fundraising efforts so it can continue assisting cancer patients.
Members of the public are also encouraged to purchase this year’s Cancer Awareness Walk T-shirts, available in small, medium and large for $25 each.
Shirts can be purchased at JK Biomedical Laboratory in San Ignacio, Codd’s Drug Store in San Ignacio and Santa Elena, and CP Puma Gas Station in Santa Elena.
