KuCoin has added KCUSD as a margin asset in its Unified Trading Account, allowing eligible users to support trading positions while continuing to accrue product rewards. Its October 12 announcement advertises a rate of up to 4% APR, but explicitly says that rate is neither fixed nor guaranteed.
The feature is available to VIP 1 users and above, subject to jurisdiction, account status and a phased rollout. It is not an unrestricted offer to every KuCoin customer. Supported trading scenarios and collateral conditions remain governed by the account’s applicable rules.
One balance, two functions
According to KuCoin’s announcement, users can subscribe to KCUSD using USDT, USDC or USDG at a 1:1 ratio, then transfer the resulting units from their Funding Account into the trading account. Eligible rewards are paid daily to the Funding Account in KCUSD.
The change connects a yield-bearing product with trading collateral. Instead of redeeming the product before posting margin, an eligible user can keep the units in the account while they support positions. That is a change in the permitted use of a balance, not evidence that the underlying trading position has become safer.
Yield and trading profit must remain separate in any assessment of returns. Product rewards do not offset losses automatically, and an advertised annualised percentage cannot be compared directly with a position’s short-term profit or loss. A trader can earn a small reward on collateral while losing substantially more through market exposure.
Margin use restricts redemption
KuCoin says KCUSD needed to meet margin requirements may be unavailable for transfer. Losses, liabilities or liquidation can result in the units being disposed of under its risk-control rules. Redemption generally settles in the original subscription asset, but the announcement says that is not guaranteed.
This is the key operational distinction between holding an earning product on its own and using it to back a trade. When collateral is committed, the ability to move or redeem it depends on the account’s obligations. A balance that appears in an asset screen is not necessarily a freely withdrawable balance.
Readers unfamiliar with derivatives can use our funding-rate explainer to distinguish payments associated with perpetual positions from rewards on collateral. They are different cash-flow mechanisms; earning one does not eliminate the cost or risk of the other.
The quoted rate is a condition, not a promise
The headline figure should therefore be read with the product’s qualifications attached. Eligibility, the prevailing APR, usable margin value and redemption terms all matter. The announcement does not provide a basis for assuming deposit insurance, a guaranteed return, universal availability or protection against liquidation.
For eligible customers, the practical development is that KCUSD can perform both an earning and collateral role without an initial redemption step. For risk assessment, those roles should still be examined separately. Combining them inside one account improves operational convenience; it does not turn leveraged trading into a savings product.
