Kathmandu, October 16
Tribhuvan University (TU) will hold convocation ceremonies in all seven provinces for the first time, ending the need for students to travel to Kathmandu from remote areas.
TU will hold the main convocation in Kathmandu in January 2027, followed by provincial ceremonies at different times in each province. Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Bhola Thapa said dates are yet to be set and that he returned from Dhangadhi in Sudurpaschim just yesterday after consultations. He said the response has been positive everywhere.
TU will convert its regional examination control offices into provincial structures to prepare for the ceremonies. Each province will have a committee led by the provincial office head, including heads and staff of constituent, community and affiliated private campuses. The committee will recommend venues, which could be public spaces or campuses. Thapa said the full rituals of the main ceremony need not be repeated in every province.
Applications have so far been low, but Thapa expects a rush near the deadline and said the university will go ahead regardless.
“We have to begin somewhere,” he said.
Students from east to west previously had to spend lakhs of rupees to attend in Kathmandu, often with family members, and some employees could not leave work to come.
A total of 95,540 students are graduating this year, having completed various levels between Asar 1, 2082 and the end of Asar 2083. Management has the most, with 43,142, followed by Education with 19,533, Humanities and Social Sciences with 15,441 and Law with 3,001.
