It's game week again for the Minnesota Vikings (5-0). They take on the struggling Indianapolis Colts (2-4) in Week 7.
The matchup features two teams heading in two very different directions. Some are suggesting that the Vikings could make a trade deal and take on an expiring Colts contract to push for a Super Bowl title.
A-to-Z Sports analyst Tyler Forness had an idea. He shared why the Vikings may target Colts defensive lineman DeForest Buckner. Here is some of what Forness had to say on that potential move.
"The Indianapolis Colts are a fascinating team. Earlier on Monday, they fired general manager Chris Ballard after starting the season at 2-4. Across the league, players are being discussed as potential trade candidates, including running back Jonathan Taylor, safety Cam Bynum, and left guard Quenton Nelson. While those are all good candidates, the Vikings should make one of them a priority: DeForest Buckner.
First off, you can always use more defensive line help. Every Super Bowl winner from the past decade has either had an alpha like Aaron Donald or a very deep pass rush room. Right now, the Vikings don’t truly have either. Now, Dallas Turner could be that alpha, but he isn’t there yet. The addition of Buckner could be a huge addition. He was a first-team All-Pro in 2020 and second-team in 2019. In his career, Buckner has 75.5 sacks and already has 4.0 this season.
Acquiring him will likely cost a minimal price as well, being on an expiring contract. If the Vikings give up a third-round pick, likely the one from the Eagles, it could probably get it done. Will Teasley be able to make it happen? Only time will tell with the trade deadline coming on November 10th, but it could be a huge win for them this season."
The Vikings will have plenty of time to talk with the Colts front office this week. After all, they'll be in the same building when the two teams meet this weekend. Still, whether or not the Colts are ready to strike a deal is still to be seen.
The Colts are not mathematically ruled out of the postseason. That would be difficult to do in six games. Still, they may see themselves as a team that could climb back into the playoff hunt.
Despite whatever hesitation there might be on a deal, Minnesota may well make an attempt to trade for Buckner. We'll see how it pans out.
