The institutional arm of Ripple's prime brokerage unit opens round-the-clock trading on real-world asset derivatives.
Ripple Prime has opened trading on perpetual swaps linked to tokenized stocks and commodities, according to reports from Coinspeaker and crypto.news. The launch targets institutional investors seeking exposure to real-world assets through blockchain-based instruments that trade continuously.
Unlike traditional equity and commodity markets, which operate on fixed exchange hours, these new perpetual swaps are designed to trade around the clock. That structure mirrors the always-on nature of cryptocurrency derivatives markets, where contracts like Bitcoin and Ethereum perpetuals have traded continuously for years.
The tokenized real-world asset, or RWA, sector has grown steadily as institutions look for ways to bring traditional financial instruments onto blockchain rails. Tokenization allows assets such as equities, bonds, and commodities to be represented digitally, often enabling faster settlement and broader access. Ripple has positioned itself as an infrastructure provider in this space, building on its existing payments and custody businesses.
Perpetual swaps are derivative contracts without an expiration date, allowing traders to hold positions indefinitely while paying or receiving funding rates based on market conditions. Applying this structure to stocks and commodities marks a departure from how those assets have historically been traded, where market hours and clearing schedules limit when positions can be opened or closed.
Ripple Prime's offering is aimed specifically at institutional capital, a segment that has shown growing interest in tokenized assets but has often been constrained by regulatory uncertainty and limited product availability. By packaging real-world asset exposure into a derivatives format familiar to crypto trading desks, Ripple Prime may lower some of the operational barriers that have kept larger institutional players on the sidelines.
The timing of the launch coincides with broader industry momentum around tokenization. Major financial institutions and asset managers have in recent periods explored tokenized versions of money market funds, treasuries, and equities. Continuous trading access for these instruments could appeal to firms operating across multiple time zones or seeking to manage risk outside standard market hours.
Details on specific assets covered, trading volumes, or counterparties involved in the Ripple Prime launch were not included in the available reporting. It also remains unclear how the swaps are collateralized or which custody arrangements underpin the tokenized underlying assets, questions that institutional participants typically scrutinize before committing capital.
Market Impact
If adopted at scale, 24/7 trading on tokenized stocks and commodities could change how institutional desks manage exposure to traditional assets outside normal market hours. Continuous markets may also increase price discovery opportunities but could introduce volatility during periods when underlying cash markets are closed and liquidity is thinner.
The launch adds to a broader trend of blending crypto market structure with traditional finance products. Competing platforms and incumbent exchanges may face pressure to offer similar round-the-clock access if institutional demand for tokenized RWA derivatives grows.
Ripple Prime's move signals continued institutional interest in blending traditional asset exposure with crypto-native trading infrastructure. Further details on adoption, volumes, and regulatory treatment will likely shape how significant this launch becomes for the broader tokenization market.
