On Wednesday, Mahomes shared his thoughts on Bailey, who was his teammate with Kansas City for two seasons.
Chiefs Star Quarterback Mahomes Remembers Bailey
“I tell this story every year: He was the first person I saw when I stepped into the locker room after the [2017] draft,” Mahomes said, via Nate Taylor of ESPN. “I see Allen Bailey and I’m like, ‘This isn’t the Big 12 anymore.’ It was surreal to see him.”
The former Texas Tech Red Raiders star quarterback also highlighted the impact of Bailey on the team.
“Obviously, it’s terrible to hear the news. A great teammate — he’s one of those glue guys on the team. He makes plays. He’s not necessarily a superstar, but the guy that kind of makes everything go. We’re praying for his family. [As] teammates, we’ve talked and we know that we’re going to do whatever we can to support those guys.”
Kansas City welcomed Bailey into the NFL in 2011 as the team’s third -round pick.
A product of the Miami Hurricanes football program, Allen played 102 games with 61 starts for the Chiefs, recording 19.5 sacks and 207 combined tackles to go along with 33 quarterback hits. He played his final two seasons in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons.
Bailey was 37.
Mahomes and the 5-0 Chiefs can dedicate their upcoming Week 6 matchup against the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Seattle Seahawks, to Bailey.
