The latest NFL controversy occurred on Sunday during the Buffalo Bills–Las Vegas Raiders matchup when Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson spit towards Raiders tight end Brock Bowers.
He was ejected from the game.
The NFL announced its punishment for Gardner-Johnson on Monday, saying he will be suspended for one game without pay because of the incident. The Bills' next game is on Sunday, Nov. 1 against the Baltimore Ravens, which Gardner-Johnson will now miss. He is eligible to return to the team on Monday, Nov. 2.
Some media members are even calling for the Bills to release Gardner-Johnson for his behavior. He's been controversial for the past few weeks on the football field.
However, some people, like retired player Rob Gronkowski, believe Gardner-Johnson should be punished by the Bills but not cut from the team. In a rant posted by Fox Sports, Gronkowski uses the example of Philadelphia Eagles' Jalen Carter spitting on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott last year. Carter was suspended for one game, and it should've set a precedent for players to not spit on opponents.
"C.J. Gardner-Johnson, you got to discipline him in every way possible," Gronkowski said. "... We saw after last year in the opening game with the Philadelphia Eagles and their defensive tackle when he spit on Dak Prescott. Like, that's not allowed. I thought the spitting would be done in the NFL after that example with Jalen Carter. I don't see why a player would do that. It's stuck in everyone's mind. That's so unnecessary."
Gronk makes a great point. Why any player thinks they would get away with spitting towards a player is shocking. It's clear there will be discipline for the action. All that does is put their team in a rough spot.

Gronkowski continued by saying that he believes the Bills should punish Gardner-Johnson, but not in the extreme ways some people are calling for.
"If I'm the Buffalo Bills, I'm discipling him big time," Gardner-Johnson said. "I wouldn't want to kick him off the team or anything."
We'll see what the Bills decide to do about Gardner-Johnson in the coming days.
