- This comes as the National Assembly deliberates on the Public Service Superannuation Scheme (Amendment) Bill which aims to streamline the governance and administration of the public service pension system.
The Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) has urged political leaders to desist from attacking the effectiveness of the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), claiming subjective oversight.
This comes as the National Assembly deliberates on the Public Service Superannuation Scheme (Amendment) Bill which aims to streamline the governance and administration of the public service pension system.
In a communiqué, COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli alleged unsubstantiated accusations against the Fund that risk destroying public confidence in an institution on which millions of Kenyan workers depend for retirement security.
He claimed that politicians made unfounded accusations that NSSF officers are demanding cash from retirees without presenting evidence.
"What makes the parliamentary attacks even more unfortunate is that they completely disregard the remarkable transformation that NSSF has undergone over the past three years," he said.
He faulted Kikuyu MP and National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah for leading the pack of legislators chiding the Bill, urging him to remain an impartial statesman and defend policies that benefit the people.
"It is precisely because of the respect we have for his leadership that we find his participation in these unfortunate remarks particularly disappointing," he said.
He also called for objective debates in the House, saying that the growing financial strength of NSSF may attract heightened political interest from individuals seeking to influence the management and investment decisions of the Fund.
Atwoli urged the Fund's management not to bow to intimidation as the nation gears into a heightened political season ahead of the 2027 General Election.
COTU has two representatives on the NSSF Board of Trustees, maintaining it will fiercely defend against allegations targeting the management of workers' retirement savings.
The Bill reached the Committee of the Whole House stage in October 2026.
