Aston Villa have entered a new phase under Unai Emery, with significant changes reshaping the squad and creating fresh competition for places. The summer departures of established names have altered the dressing room, leaving experienced players with greater responsibility for helping newcomers settle.
Villa’s recruitment strategy has brought a different balance to the squad. Younger arrivals offer energy and long-term potential, while established professionals must maintain standards during a demanding domestic and European campaign. Emery expects his players to take responsibility, work independently and uphold the club’s culture.
The transition has already produced encouraging signs. New arrivals have integrated well, and Villa’s recent 1-0 victory at St James’ Park offered evidence of the group’s growing understanding. Johan Manzambi scored the decisive goal after Joao Gomes supplied the cross in the 36th minute.
Such results strengthen the case for maintaining experienced figures within a changing squad. However, age, wages and contract length remain important considerations for a club seeking greater financial flexibility.
Tyrone Mings now faces that uncertainty. The 33-year-old English centre-back has made six Premier League appearances in 2026/27, including four starts, accumulating 443 minutes. He has completed 89% of his 231 passes, recorded 32 clearances and three interceptions, and won 71.4% of his duels. Two clean sheets underline his defensive contribution.
Mings’ contract expires on 30 June 2027. His reported gross salary stands at £110,000 per week, equivalent to £5.72 million annually. Villa must decide whether his leadership and defensive reliability justify another deal.
Mings highlighted that while he does not know the exact formula or intention behind the club’s extensive summer squad rebuild, the overhaul has brought a definitive “freshness” and “oxygenated” feeling to the training ground, sparking excitement about what the new group can achieve.
This revitalisation follows the high-profile summer departures of key players like Emi Martinez, Ezri Konsa, and Morgan Rogers, with Mings noting that retaining last year’s squad might have caused the team to struggle following their recent European success.
The 33-year-old center-back emphasised that established players must act as a bridge between the old and new eras by driving daily training standards and reinforcing the team culture.
Mings credited the new arrivals for their fantastic integration and reiterated the manager’s expectation for the squad to be mature, responsible, and self-motivated, concluding that despite the adaptation taking time, the team is immensely proud and excited to embrace this huge challenge together as a unified group.
Should Aston Villa renew Tyrone Mings’ contract or allow him to leave in 2027?

From Emery’s perspective, Mings remains useful as an experienced squad member rather than an automatic starter. Pau Torres and Taylor Harwood-Bellis offer younger options, while Victor Lindelöf provides additional depth. Mings’ left-footed distribution, aerial ability and familiarity with Villa’s demands give the manager another dependable option.
His statistics support that role. An 89% passing rate and a 71.4% duel success rate indicate useful control and physical presence. However, limited recovery pace and mobility could become liabilities against quicker attacking sides. His £110,000 weekly salary further complicates negotiations as Villa seek financial efficiency.
A short extension could preserve leadership without forcing Emery to rely on Mings every week. Nevertheless, Villa should avoid committing substantial wages to a player whose role may continue shrinking. If suitable terms cannot be agreed then allowing his contract to expire in June 2027 would make financial sense.
For me, Villa should offer a reduced salary with a clearly defined squad role, rather than guarantee regular starts. Mings can still contribute during injuries, rotation and difficult European fixtures. If he rejects those conditions, Emery should prioritise younger defensive options and redirect the savings elsewhere.
