Bo Nix could face Broncos QB competition despite Davis Webb’s bold prediction originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Davis Webb believes Bo Nix is about to heat up. The Denver Broncos may already have a plan in case he doesn’t. Webb, Denver’s offensive coordinator, shares the blame for an offense that keeps stalling. After practice this week, he praised how his quarterback handled questions about it.
“I think he’s in a good spot. I think yesterday he handled the media really good you know? He took a little bit of accountability, hyped up his teammates, and I think he’s ready to go on a little run,” Webb said.
That run comes with a clock. ESPN’s Jeff Legwold reported Oct. 23 that people in and around the organization see a likely route if Nix doesn’t improve sharply: exercise his fifth-year option in spring 2027, keep him under control through 2028 and delay a long-term deal. Bringing in another quarterback would also enter offseason talks. That leaves 11 games to change the conversation.
Denver is 4-2, but the record has outpaced the passing. Through six games, Nix ranks 31st in QBR (38.2), 32nd in yards per attempt (5.6), and 36th of 37 qualifiers in offensive success rate (36.1%).
Bo Nix’s $25 Million Option Gives Broncos a Cheaper Path Than a Mega Extension
Nix, the No. 12 overall pick in 2024, is on a four-year rookie deal worth about $18.6 million, with a 2027 cap charge near $5.9 million, per Over the Cap. Legwold pegs the option at just over $25 million under this season’s salary figures and his current playing-time and Pro Bowl marks, though the NFL formula decides the actual 2028 number.
That price tag still looks modest next to a $100 million-plus commitment, and Denver has plenty of other checks to write. Since 2024, the front office has promised over $350 million in at-signing guarantees through extensions.
Free agency also looms for a handful of starters. Wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr., guard Ben Powers and safety Brandon Jones head that group, with Ja’Quan McMillian and Riley Moss, both cornerbacks, also set to hit the open market.
Head coach Sean Payton, who said he hasn’t considered benching Nix, took the hit himself. “I’ve got to be better relative to the course of the game,” he said. “[Nix’s] play will be a by-product of all of us doing our jobs better.”
Mel Kiper Jr. has seven quarterbacks in his early top 25 for the 2027 draft, though Legwold called Denver’s interest at the top unclear.
Webb pointed to Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who shook off a slow 2025 start and carried it into this season. Nix’s shot at that path opens Oct. 25 against the Arizona Cardinals. A real surge plus a Super Bowl push reopens extension talk.
