Cottage Litchfield Hills

This Connecticut cottage lands somewhere between Practical Magic and The Holiday in the best way. The sun-washed interiors are peppered with antique artwork and furnishings, with a bright (and fully updated) lemon yellow kitchen anchoring the space.

It sits on five wooded acres with a wide stone porch out front and a wood-burning fireplace inside for cold nights. The house is right on the border of Washington and Bantam, so in terms of exploring, you have plenty of choices. Hike the trails at White Memorial Conservation Center along Bantam Lake, grab a cone at Arethusa Farm Dairy, or climb to the Steep Rock overlook in Washington.

Amenities: Indoor fireplace, AC, WiFi, central heating, circle drive with parking

Moss House

As the name suggests, you’ll be surrounded by greenery at this property. The cabin sits among tall pines above the Sheepscot River, with pine floors, poured concrete, lime plaster, and handmade tile that nod to both Nordic and Japanese design sensibilities. Speaking of, the interiors are restrained, save for a few pops of green—most notably, a hand-painted landscape on the celery-colored kitchen cabinet. But don’t spend your whole weekend cooped up: Down the path, there’s a private shoreline where you can take out provided kayaks for a spin, and a dock made for morning coffee or a good glass of wine.

Location: Georgetown, Maine

Rooms: 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom

Amenities: Private dock, 4 kayaks, wood stove, outdoor fire pit, waterside Adirondack chairs, hammocks, heat pump and AC, radiant bathroom floors, washer/dryer, WiFi

The Fox Den

The Fox Den is a sweet little cabin made for doing very little. It sits on seven private acres in the woods of southern New Hampshire, overlooking a pond. The home is thoughtfully decorated, leaning nostalgic with a screened porch for reading in the afternoon and a deck facing the water for gazing out. Here’s one quirk for the adventurous traveler: Technically, the bathroom is an outhouse, but it’s definitely the cutest one you'll ever see. (And for those looking to truly disconnect, an outdoor shower under shady maples is pure relaxation.)

Whether you chose to paddle the pond or end the night around the fire pit beneath a sky full of stars, this is the kind of spot that encourages unplugging, and guarantees a return home in revived spirits.
