Nancy Kitingon, 47, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ranau district police chief Superintendent Mursalin Mahmud said the victim was driving an Isuzu D-Max from Telupid when the vehicle hit the barrier on the left side of a bridge before plunging into the river.
"The vehicle is believed to have overturned," he said when contacted.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Earlier, seven firefighters and two fire engines from the Ranau Fire and Rescue Station were deployed to the crash site.
