The stroke burden in Likoma could soon ease, thanks to a new partnership aimed at improving awareness, early detection and access to vital health information in the island district.
StrokeAfrica.org, an organization working to advance stroke awareness, prevention and care across Africa, has joined forces with Likoma District Council to provide educational materials to health workers and communities.
Director of Health Services for Likoma District Council, Dr. Mathewe Gracewell, has welcomed the support, saying the materials could make a significant difference in a setting where such resources are scarce.
“This is a great offer and its impact can go beyond, especially in our setting where such materials are not provided,” Dr. Mathewe said.
Stroke can cause long-term disability or death, particularly when treatment is delayed. Recognising warning signs and seeking medical attention early can help reduce the risk of severe consequences.
The partnership will equip health workers and communities with information to help them identify stroke symptoms, understand risk factors and appreciate the importance of seeking medical attention without delay.
StrokeAfrica.org lists Likoma District Council among its Champion Institutions, a network of organisations working to improve stroke awareness, prevention, recognition and care across Africa.
Shiven Das, founder of the Stroke Equity Project, said the organisation’s broader goal was to address gaps in stroke information and diagnostic services across the region.
“Our larger hope is to ameliorate the stroke burden across the region, especially with regards to the lack of information and radiology available,” he said. “Our research and outreach are two of the most important ways we hope to work towards this goal.”
StrokeAfrica.org is also working with other Malawian health institutions, including the Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM) and Mulanje Mission Hospital, as part of efforts to strengthen stroke awareness and education.
The partnership comes against the backdrop of challenges in delivering healthcare across the island district, where geographical barriers can complicate access to medical services and specialised information.
St Peter’s Hospital serves as a major referral facility for the district, making community-level health education an important part of efforts to improve access to timely care.
Dr. Mathewe said the availability of appropriate information could strengthen health workers’ ability to educate residents about stroke prevention and help communities recognise the condition at an early stage.
