Jim Nantz and J.J. Watt worked Sunday’s game between the Buffalo Bills and Las Vegas Raiders. While the game was fine, the real action was taking place in the CBS booth where Watt explained how players were protecting the football to guard against defenders trying to “Peanut Punch” the ball out of their hands.
As Watt grabbed his own wrist to secure the ball he invited Nantz to try and punch it out. Nantz obliged with a punch that actually seemed to catch Watt by surprise. Nantz immediately winced as Watt laughed and said, “I didn’t think you were going to go that hard.” He also added, “That was so much harder than I thought you were going to go.” As action resumed, Nantz joked that he had broken his wrist.

The thing is, Nantz really did get hurt. When the broadcast came back from halftime, Nantz had his hand wrapped in ice. They did not directly address his injured hand, but when Watt, maybe unintentionally, said “we want to see who throws the first punch,” Nantz laughed. When Watt finished talking, Nantz didn’t say anything for a couple seconds before mentioning it had been physical at times in the first half and some people may be playing hurt.

Between Nantz’s hand and Mike McCarthy’s ankle, this is one of the weirdest NFL injury weeks we’ve ever seen.
