SpaceX and Tesla $TSLA CEO Elon Musk pledged on Monday to give one share of SpaceX stock to every child in the U.S. next year.
"Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America," Musk wrote in a post on X $TWTR. "This will be the first of many." Musk gave no specifics on the mechanics of the gift, its recipients or its timing, according to Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal.
SpaceX stock closed Friday at $146.03. Using a count of about 72 million U.S. children, the gift would be worth about $10.5 billion, according to Bloomberg and CNBC. Using about 73 million children under 18, the total would be roughly $10 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The pledge followed an Anthropic announcement on Sunday that it intends to earmark a 5% stake for a newly created public benefit fund, pending shareholder approval, according to CNBC. Anthropic's board could add another 2% each time the company's valuation climbs 50% past an undisclosed baseline.
Musk replied to Anthropic's post on X, recommending that the company give the shares "directly to the public," and added that he would do so, according to CNBC.
Musk owns about 4.8 billion shares of SpaceX stock, according to CNBC, citing an August SEC filing. The figure grows to 6.4 billion shares once unvested awards and options are included, equivalent to a 48.4% beneficial stake.
SpaceX went public in June at $135 a share. Its stock touched $105.11 in early August trading as insider lockups began to expire. Musk's 6.4 billion shares are locked up until June 2027.
Earlier this year, SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell and her husband committed SpaceX stock to roughly 2 million children in the Trump Accounts initiative, according to The Wall Street Journal, which also noted that in 2021 Musk donated Tesla stock valued at roughly $5.7 billion.
CNBC said it has asked SpaceX for comment.
