The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has called on politicians and political parties to conduct peaceful campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He also urged Nigerians to work collectively to sustain peace and stability in the country.
The Sultan made the call on Thursday after a private visit to President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja.
Speaking to journalists after the visit, the traditional and religious leader stressed the need for political actors to embrace peaceful conduct as preparations for the elections gathered momentum.
“We need peaceful campaigns by everybody, and we pray to Almighty Allah to grant us peace and stability in our country as we go in for elections,” he said.
He expressed hope that the electoral process would produce leaders capable of advancing the country’s interests and improving the well-being of Nigerians.
“May He Almighty give us the best we deserve in this country,” the Sultan added.
The appeal comes as political parties and prospective candidates intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, with consultations and political activities expected to increase nationwide.
Traditional and religious leaders have continued to advocate restraint, national unity and peaceful participation in the electoral process.
The Sultan’s appeal underscores the importance of responsible political engagement by leaders, party supporters and citizens to ensure peaceful preparations for the 2027 elections.
