For eighteen months, a woman from Almaty lived with a growing tumor in her abdomen, attributing the sensation of heaviness and an expanding belly to extra weight she had gained. As a result, the tumor reached the size of a full-term pregnancy. When it started to cause pain, the woman decided to see a doctor.
At the hospital, she underwent ultrasound, CT and MRI examinations, which revealed that the issue was not excess weight but a massive tumor that occupied nearly the entire abdominal cavity.
Although the risks were extremely high due to the advanced stage of the condition and the presence of adhesions from previous surgeries, doctors moved to remove the tumor. The procedure was successful, and doctors left all of the patient’s reproductive organs intact.
During the surgery, doctors removed the tumor — weighing approximately three kilograms — and drained about seven liters of fluid. They also sent the extracted tissue for histological analysis and the patient is currently in satisfactory condition, receiving inpatient care and preparing for discharge.
Healthcare specialists emphasized that a rapid increase in abdominal size, accompanied by shortness of breath, pain and a feeling of heaviness, is not always the result of weight gain. If these symptoms appear, see a doctor as soon as possible for a proper medical examination to identify the underlying cause.
