On Sunday, around seventy people staged a human-chain protest against a plan to create a farm with 80,000 chickens on the Son Brau finca in Manacor. Local residents and animal-welfare organisations held the protest near to the proposed location for the farm.
A few days ago, ARDE and Satya Animal filed complaints with the Prosecutor’s Office and the ministry of agriculture, alleging poor conditions at two other farms operated by the same company - Avícola Son Perot - in Manacor.
A spokesperson for residents said that they would not stop voicing their opposition, citing the environmental and social impact. They maintain that the farm would cause bad smells and pose a risk to local aquifers. They are calling on the Balearic government to reject the project.
Julia Elizalde of the animal-welfare organisation ARDE, said: "We have witnessed what happens inside this company's farms; therefore, they must be stopped before they even begin to function." She was referring to images from a farm in Llucmajor as well as those presented last week that were said to be from the two farms in Manacor.
The company has defended itself, claiming to be the victim of "a harassment campaign orchestrated by animal-rights groups, set against a sensitive political and pre-electoral backdrop in Mallorca". Avícola Son Perot has announced that it will take legal action against activists over the images released last week.
The mayor of Manacor, Ferran Montero, was among the protesters. Manacor Town Hall has submitted technical reports opposing the Son Brau project.
