The NBA schedule-makers sure do love drama. Part of the Opening Night slate, the Oklahoma City Thunder are picking up right where they left off five months ago. They're traveling to face the San Antonio Spurs in a game that means more than just one of 82.
The Thunder and Spurs are viewed as co-title favorites. Many expect them to be regular-season win machines once again and jockey for the NBA's best record. But considering how the 2026 Western Conference Finals played out in an epic seven-game duel, one team has more to prove than the other on Tuesday.
For the Thunder, they're entering Opening Night in a must-win scenario.
Yep. You read that right. The Thunder *have* to beat the Spurs in enemy territory. The entire NBA world will have its eyes glued to the screen in a must-watch TV matchup. Now, you might say: 'Clemente, surely you're not serious? I mean, I get the sentimental importance of it, but it's literally the first game of an 82-game marathon. Heck, we don't even know if a postseason rematch is as inevitable as it feels right now. Sports are wild and unpredictable like that!'
My rebuttal? Doesn't matter. This is the team that punked you all of last year. The Spurs beat OKC eight out of 12 times — combining the five regular-season matchups and seven playoff games. You can add a caveat on top of a caveat in terms of who was out for both sides, but at the end of the day, none of that matters. The record book reflects that the Thunder had a San Antonio problem in the 2025-26 season. Will that seep over to the 2026-27 campaign?
The best way to ensure folks that the answer will be different this year is with an Opening Night statement win on the road. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander starts off his historically-improbable third straight MVP campaign on a strong note. Jalen Williams assures folks that the 2026 result would've been different if he had healthy hammies. And Chet Holmgren finally stands up against his age-old bully, Victor Wembanyama.
The Spurs aren't afraid to muddy things up. Several players have actively talked about their beef with the Thunder. Meanwhile, the 2025 NBA champions have taken the high road. Refusing to say that San Antonio dictated its summer or lives in their heads as its top rival. But you can only pull off that card if you're beating them on the court. OKC hasn't done that in a while.
The game itself means the same as a random November matchup against the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA standings, but the emotions and deep history tied to the two franchises give it a feeling closer to a playoff game than your average regular-season night.
As of now, the Thunder will only get three chances to influence their big season-long narrative of finally getting over the Spurs. At least, in the regular season. Opening Night is the biggest stage of the three to prove that. While an OKC win won't completely rewrite things, it'd be a step in the right direction.
