CELEBRITY STYLE

Back in March, when Matthieu Blazy’s first Chanel designs hit stores during Paris Fashion Week, editors experienced a mass psychosis, swarming boutiques between Rue Cambon and Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in pursuit, mostly, of the Belgian designer’s fresh takes on the house’s ladylike two-tone pumps. There were reports of shoppers waiting 60 minutes to be paired with a sales associate, while the press dubbed the whole thing “Chanel Mania”.
Even Victoria Beckham seems to have caught the bug, though, true to form, she has taken a less obvious route. Visiting her recently opened New York flagship yesterday afternoon, the designer was photographed in a knitted khaki two-piece, with an Hermès Kelly hooked over her shoulder and a pair of heels from Karl Lagerfeld’s 2010 Chanel collections on her feet. Studded with faux pearls across the contrasting toe cap and counter, they are a little higher than her usual pumps, but otherwise sit comfortably within Beckham’s perversely prim shoedrobe, which long predates the current frenzy.

It reminds me of something contributing editor Olivia Singer wrote in British Vogue’s May 2026 issue. “For those of us who like a prim and proper shoe – whether it’s how they make us feel or how they make us look – there’s an authority in the decision to wear them, in the clothes with which we style them, and where we go in them,” she argued, noting that her own collection had taken her trekking across deserts, horse riding and quad biking. You could imagine VB saying much the same. She has, after all, found few activities that she cannot complete at a slight elevation: scaling a rock face in Formentera; swimming at Baden-Baden’s Brenners Park-Hotel & Spa during the 2006 World Cup; and navigating fashion week in 2024 with one foot in an Alaïa mule and the other in a leg brace.
