The NBA opened its new season with a doubleheader, featuring LeBron James' Philadelphia 76ers debut against the defending champion New York Knicks, and the matchup delivered historic television viewership.
The entertaining game, shown on NBC and Peacock on Tuesday, Oct. 20, averaged 7.71 million viewers and peaked at 9.1 million viewers at 9:45 p.m. ET, according to NBA Communications. It was the most-watched primetime opening game in the league's history.
In addition to James' debut, Jaylen Brown also debuted for the 76ers. Adding to the big-game feel was the event being hosted at Madison Square Garden, where the Knicks received their championship rings and raised the championship banner before the game. However, James and the 76ers spoiled the Knicks' championship celebration at MSG with a 106-100 victory.
King James finished the game with 14 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, a steal, and a block in his first regular season game for Philadelphia.

It was a big opening night overall. The second game of the night featured a Western Conference Finals rematch between the San Antonio Spurs and the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder made a statement to begin their season, defeating Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs, 116-104, in San Antonio.
The doubleheader became the league's "most-watched opening night ever, averaging 6.41 million viewers on NBC/Peacock," per NBA Communications.
With the NBA season just beginning, the race for the championship could look much different this year. Multiple teams strengthened their rosters through trades and free-agent acquisitions, while others welcomed back key players who missed significant time last season.
Along with the 76ers adding to their lineup, the Miami Heat also added multiple players, including Giannis Antetokounmpo and Klay Thompson. The Minnesota Timberwolves traded for LaMelo Ball to pair him up with Anthony Edwards in the backcourt.
Star players returning from their hiatuses last season included Damian Lillard for the Portland Trail Blazers and Tyrese Haliburton for the Indiana Pacers. Both teams achieved victories in their Wednesday night openers.
If the opening night numbers are any indication, fans seem extremely eager to see how things unfold in this new NBA season.
