Opposition political parties in Nigeria have commenced consultations with presidential candidates as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation and develop a coordinated approach ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The consultations involve national chairmen and national secretaries of six opposition parties, who have met with presidential candidates of five parties in furtherance of resolutions reached at the G100 Opposition Summit.
The parties are the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, and signed by Salihu Moh. Lukman on behalf of the coalition parties, the presidential candidates involved were identified as former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar of the ADC, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde of the APM, Peter Obi of the NDC, Adewole Adebayo of the SDP and Donald Duke of the PRP.
The statement did not identify the PDP’s presidential candidate among those involved in the consultations.
G100 resolutions drive consultations
According to the coalition, the engagements are being undertaken to implement the resolutions of the G100 Opposition Summit, which called for sustained dialogue, stronger cooperation and a coordinated approach among opposition parties in defence of multiparty democracy and the interests of Nigerians.
The coalition described the consultations as a practical step towards translating the summit’s resolutions into action, noting that the meetings provide an opportunity for party leaders and presidential candidates to deliberate on the framework for cooperation ahead of the elections.
It said the discussions would focus on identifying areas of common ground and considering the steps necessary to advance a shared democratic agenda, although the statement did not disclose any specific agreement reached by the participants.
The coalition added that the consultations were part of ongoing strategic deliberations intended to establish a basis for cooperation among opposition parties as preparations for the 2027 general elections continue.
Opposition cooperation in focus
The statement said the consultations were driven by the conviction that the challenges confronting Nigeria required serious engagement across political party lines.
It maintained that Nigerians deserved political leaders willing to prioritise the country’s future, the welfare of citizens and the credibility of elections above narrow political interests.
The coalition did not announce any merger arrangement, joint presidential ticket or formal electoral alliance in the statement. Rather, it emphasised dialogue, cooperation and the development of a coordinated approach among the participating parties.
The consultations also come amid preparations by political parties for the 2027 general elections, with the opposition groups seeking to build on the resolutions reached at the G100 summit.
Further meetings expected
The coalition confirmed that the consultations remained ongoing, adding that further engagements would build on the G100 resolutions and the commitment to an organised and responsible opposition capable of working together in the national interest.
It said Nigerians would be informed of substantive decisions and agreed next steps as the deliberations progressed.
