Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension and a fine of 255 euros ($285.83) by the Portuguese Football Federation after leaving the national team camp following a dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus.
The federation’s disciplinary council announced the decision on Monday, upholding the charge against the 41-year-old forward.
Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen ahead of their Nations League match against Denmark after disagreements over his role in the team.
The dispute followed Portugal’s match against Norway, in which Ronaldo remained on the bench. He accused Jesus of twice breaking promises regarding his playing role.
Ronaldo said comments made by Jesus during a press conference, followed by a conversation with federation president Pedro Proenca, prompted him to leave the camp.
Jesus denied making any agreement with Ronaldo but left the door open for his return following Portugal’s 2-1 victory.
The federation’s disciplinary council found Ronaldo guilty of intentionally violating Article 160(1) of its disciplinary regulations. Proceedings were opened on October 9 over an incident reported two days earlier.
However, the federation did not clarify which matches or activities the suspension would cover or whether time already served under a provisional suspension would count toward the 30-day ban.
Following his departure, Ronaldo issued a statement of more than 1,700 words to Portuguese media, which he later shared on social media.
He apologized for failing to acknowledge supporters after the Norway match and for leaving his teammates.
Meanwhile, Proenca said everyone within the federation supported Ronaldo’s return to the national team once the matter was resolved.
