The Kano State House of Assembly has referred a lawmaker representing Nasarawa constituency, Yusuf Bello Aliyu, to its Committee on Ethics and Privileges over a controversial social media post allegedly ridiculing Governor Abba Yusuf.
The decision followed a motion raised by the member representing Minjibir constituency, Abdulhamid Abdul, during Tuesday’s plenary presided over by the Speaker, Ismail Falgore.
Abdul drew the attention of lawmakers to a viral post purportedly showing Aliyu holding a rabbit by its ears while making comments considered offensive to the governor. He asked the House to examine the incident and determine whether the lawmaker breached the standards expected of elected representatives.
He argued that members of the Assembly should conduct themselves in ways that protect the institution’s reputation and maintain public trust. He also called for an apology and appropriate disciplinary action if the allegations were substantiated.
Backing the call, the member representing Takai constituency, Musa Kachako, said the controversy raised concerns about how public officials use social media.
Kachako urged the Assembly to explore legal measures to address abusive online content, stressing that lawmakers should exercise responsibility when communicating through digital platforms.
The members representing Madobi constituency, Sulaiman Mukhtar and the member representing Kiru constituency, Usman Abubakar Tasiu also supported the motion, maintaining that political disagreements should not be used to justify conduct perceived as disrespectful.
They stressed that the committee should establish the facts surrounding the post before determining whether any wrongdoing had occurred, noting the importance of fairness to both the accused lawmaker and the public.
Following the debate, Speaker Falgore referred the matter to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges and directed it to submit its findings to the House on Wednesday.
