Everton midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall stepped up to the plate in the second half on Sunday afternoon.
It was a disappointing first-half performance from Dewsbury-Hall, and it's fair to say he's not hit the levels expected of him so far this season. What Dewsbury-Hall can't be accused of is not being involved in games.
The former Chelsea man is always looking to make an impact, even if it's not going well for him. As a result, he's always going to be in and amongst the goals and assists.
What's disappointed fans is his wastefulness in possession at times, and that was evident against Hull in the first half. Good players bounce back, though, and he did just that against Hull.
What Dewsbury-Hall also offers Everton is leadership. He's been around the block at multiple English clubs now, and is one of the more experienced players in the squad.
Losing Idrissa Gueye and Seamus Coleman left an experienced-shaped hole in the side, so it's important the likes of Dewsbury-Hall step up.
So far, it's looking as though he's doing just that.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall 'Annoyed' By Everton MeltdownsKiernan Dewsbury-Hall has given an interview, discussing Everton's transfer window, ambitions, and Harrison Armstrong.Dewsbury-Hall's leadership
Dewsbury-Hall has been fairly outspoken so far this season. The Everton midfielder hit back at meltdowns surrounding the club following the disappointing summer transfer window, and he's clearly made a conscious effort not to hide away from things.
That's never been something labelled at Dewsbury-Hall during his time at Everton. He'll always speak publicly if Everton have been disappointing, and he's not afraid to speak his mind.
What we don't see is what happens behind the scenes, but Dewsbury-Hall has given us some insight into that, discussing his and Thierno Barry's relationship.
"I really like his mentality. He’s one of the hardest-working players I’ve played with. He’s always working, trying to improve. We have a love-hate relationship because I expect so much off him. Sometimes I’ll probably annoy him but he’s come back and he's got really hungry, and he’s improving every game," said Dewsbury-Hall.
The 28-year-old gave us some insight into, not only Barry's attitude, but his own leadership qualities. Dewsbury-Hall is clearly demanding a lot from the striker, which is great to see, and it'll hopefully benefit Everton in the long run.
"I like the fact that he said he could have scored three because he’s scored today, he’s helped us get a point, but I know for a fact he’s going to continue to work. I’m going to keep wanting more from him, but only because I like him and I want the best for him and I’m happy that he’s continuing to score," added Dewsbury-Hall.
Everton need leaders in the squad. As mentioned, we've already lost Gueye and Coleman heading into the season.
Dewsbury-Hall feels like the type who is happy to step into that role, and it's often the things that we don't see behind the scenes that help justify a player's selection.
Hopefully the second half performance from Dewsbury-Hall can help kickstart his season. As a player who knows how good he can be, he'll know he's not been perfect this campaign, but there's no doubt he will get back to his best.
Dewsbury-Hall, at his best, is a crucial player for Everton. Sometimes, you need them players who just somehow find goals and assists even when not playing well. That's not to say Dewsbury-Hall isn't a consistent performer, but he can pop up with a contribution from nowhere.
He will have another point to prove this weekend, as he goes up against his former side once again.
