MEXICO CITY — Following exhaustive botanical reviews, federal agriculture officials confirmed Tuesday that every last specimen of native Mexican agave will eventually be accounted for, fermented, distilled or otherwise converted into an intoxicating spirit, reassuring a watchful public that no succulent will be left behind to pursue a pointless career as mere flora.
According to a sweeping directive released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER), Mexican researchers have successfully mapped more than a dozen distinct traditional beverages — including tequila, mezcal, pulque, bacanora, raicilla, tutsi and tepe — but warned that allowing any of the country’s 159 endemic species to complete their natural life cycle without encountering a copper alembic would constitute a historic administrative failure.
“We have documented agaves that resemble artichokes, agaves that resemble octopuses and specimens that grow 33-foot flower stalks at a rate of four inches a day,” said lead research coordinator Dr. Mateo Escalante, standing beside an experimental fermentation vat containing a rare Agave parviflora. “Yet, despite these incredible evolutionary adaptations, our mandate is absolute: no agave shall evade the barrel.”
The report noted that while pre-Hispanic societies historically utilized the agave plant for structural fibers, construction materials and sewing needles, modern bureaucratic planning has successfully streamlined the plant’s destiny toward liquid form. Officials acknowledged that while smaller varieties may yield little more than a thimble of artisanal spirit per harvest, diligent planning ensures that even roadside succulents will find their way into a clay copita.
Addressing historical anomalies, such as Sonora’s 1915 prohibition on bacanora designed to prevent moral perversion, SADER officials emphasized that government policy has fully pivoted. Rather than restricting regional output, the current administration actively monitors the nation’s flora to guarantee that every municipality exercises its legal right to produce a smoky, high-proof distillate from whatever happens to be growing in the dirt.
“Our ancestors spent thousands of years discovering that Agave tequilana flowers in seven years while Agave deserti takes 55,” Escalante added. “Our duty to future generations is to ensure that no matter how long a plant takes to mature, a distillation schedule is waiting for it the moment it ripens.”
