Newcastle United contract calls and Anthony Elanga Boost
Newcastle United head into another important stretch with several significant issues moving at once, from Jacob Murphy’s contract situation to Anthony Elanga’s recovery, from Joe Willock’s uncertain future to the ongoing debate around Matias Fernandez-Pardo’s best role. Credit to Daily Mail for the original reporting, which paints a picture of a club still calm internally despite a difficult run of results away from home.
The key takeaway is that, while there is no obvious panic inside St James’ Park, there are active decisions being taken around squad planning, asset protection and immediate first-team needs. In that sense, the latest developments say plenty about how Newcastle are trying to manage the present while keeping one eye firmly on the next two windows.
Jacob Murphy deal close as Newcastle protect value
Jacob Murphy is, according to the report, “very close to agreeing a new contract” and that feels like one of the more logical pieces of business Newcastle can complete in the short term. The proposed extension, which would take him to the summer of 2028, is described as a 12-month addition on improved terms. On the surface, that may look modest. In practice, it is sensible.
Murphy’s current deal expires next summer, and once Nottingham Forest pushed their offers “as high as £15million” in August, the situation moved beyond simple squad depth. Newcastle had a decision to make, either cash in or retain a trusted senior player and revisit his terms. Matthias Jaissle’s preference was clear. The head coach “made it clear he wanted him to stay”, valuing Murphy’s leadership around a younger dressing room as much as his output on the pitch.

That matters. Newcastle are not only judging Murphy on what he gives them over 90 minutes this month, they are also weighing his influence over standards, habits and continuity. He may not yet have hit top form in recent appearances, but his 2024-25 return of nine goals and 14 assists is recent enough to suggest there is still value there. The club also know that allowing a long-serving player to run into the final weeks of his contract would weaken their position. As the report puts it, “the club would at least be able to command a fee rather than lose him for nothing.”
There is another layer to this. Even if Murphy signs, it does not guarantee he stays beyond this season. It simply gives Newcastle control. In a market where capable, home-grown, experienced attacking players remain useful and expensive, control is often the first objective.
Anthony Elanga return offers timely lift
For Jaissle, there is more immediate encouragement in the update on Anthony Elanga. Newcastle have missed his speed, directness and energy since the hamstring issue he suffered before the trip to Leeds on September 14. Early fears suggested he could be out for up to two months, but the latest line is far more positive.
The report states that Elanga “is now in the final stages of his rehab” and that “he has made significant progress and could rejoin training shortly.” If that timeline holds, it would be a substantial boost for a side that looked sharper with him in it during the opening phase of the Premier League campaign.
Jaissle’s team were unbeaten across their first three league matches with Elanga involved, and the contrast with the recent sequence has been plain enough. Newcastle have “lost two from three in his absence”, and while football rarely turns on one player alone, Elanga’s profile does offer something few others in the squad can replicate. He stretches games, carries the ball with conviction and opens spaces for those around him.
There is also encouragement on Bazoumana Toure, who is “thought to have avoided serious injury” after the heavy blow suffered late in the 4-1 defeat at Coventry. Taken together, those fitness developments ease some pressure on a squad that has looked thin in key attacking areas over the past fortnight.
Our View
As a frustrated Newcastle supporter, this all feels a bit too neat on paper and not nearly sharp enough where it matters, on the pitch. We can talk about protecting value, contract control and Squad Cost Ratio all day long, but fans want to see a team that looks balanced, dangerous and properly coached. Right now, too much of the conversation is about financial logic and not enough about football logic.
Murphy getting a new deal is fair enough if Jaissle trusts him, but supporters also need to know there is a bigger attacking plan than handing out extensions and hoping injured players come back quickly. Elanga returning is good news, obviously, because we have missed his pace badly. But one player returning from a hamstring issue should not feel like the answer to everything.
The Fernandez-Pardo situation is the one that really grates. If the lad wants to be a striker, fine, but Newcastle have paid £51m and it still sounds like nobody is certain where he is best. That is a concern. Then there is Willock, another contract drifting, another situation that looks like it could have been handled earlier.
And after back-to-back 4-1 defeats away from home, hearing it is “business as usual” does not exactly fill fans with confidence. Calm is good. Passivity is not. Newcastle need a response, quickly, because this fanbase will not stay patient forever if the same issues keep repeating.
