Residents in Redan, Meyerton and surrounding areas near Vereeniging have been urged to remain vigilant amid reports that an escaped lion is still on the loose.
The warning follows a reported sighting in Redan, where a security guard allegedly spotted the big cat at about 3.50am on Wednesday, October 14.
The animal’s origin has not been confirmed, and residents have been urged to exercise caution while the search continues.
People living in the affected areas should avoid walking, jogging or cycling in isolated areas until authorities confirm that the lion has been located and safely contained.
Residents should also keep children and pets indoors and avoid approaching the animal if they spot it.
How to stay safe if you encounter a lion:
Stay indoors and secure pets
Keep children and pets inside, close doors and gates, and avoid unnecessary trips outdoors in areas where the lion may be roaming.
Never approach the animal
Do not attempt to take close-up photographs, feed the lion, chase it away or try to capture it. A lion is a dangerous wild animal and should be left to trained wildlife professionals.
If you spot the lion, seek shelter
If possible, get inside a secure building or vehicle without moving towards the animal. Do not run or make sudden movements. If you encounter it on foot, avoid approaching or cornering it and retreat slowly towards safety if you can do so without increasing the danger.
Warn others responsibly
Alert neighbours to the reported danger, particularly those with children and pets. Share verified information from authorities rather than unconfirmed sightings or speculation on social media.
Report sightings immediately
Contact the police on 10111 and provide the exact location, time and direction in which the animal was moving, if this can be observed safely. Do not organise a group to search for the lion.
Residents should continue following official updates until authorities confirm that the animal has been safely located and contained
