Loulé Council has launched a new website dedicated entirely to the municipality’s five locally protected natural areas, bringing information about their landscapes, wildlife, trails and scientific projects together in one place.
The platform, launched on October 18 to mark the 16th anniversary of the Rocha da Pena and Fonte Benémola Local Protected Landscapes, covers Rocha da Pena Local Protected Landscape, Fonte Benémola Local Protected Landscape, Foz do Almargem and Trafal Local Nature Reserve, Nave do Barão Local Nature Reserve, and Vale Telheiro Cave Local Natural Monument.
Each protected area has its own section featuring information on its natural and cultural heritage, technical details and photo and video galleries.

Visitors can also find details about scientific and monitoring projects being carried out in the areas, as well as suggestions for exploring them through walking routes, soundscapes and Algarvensis Geopark routes.
News and updates about conservation work and other activities will also be published on the platform.
“Investing in the environment and preserving natural resources is investing in a quality future,” said Loulé Mayor Telmo Pinto.
“With this website, we want to bring people closer to our protected areas, so that they can get to know them, value them and help us look after them.”
The council says the website addresses a long-standing need to gather information about the five areas in a single, easily accessible place.
It is intended not only for residents and visitors, but also for the scientific community and organisations involved in the management and study of the areas, allowing them to follow information and updates more easily.
The initiative is supported by European funding through the ALGARVE 2030 Regional Programme.
The website can be accessed at areasprotegidas.cm-loule.pt.
