This year’s rainfall deficit in Maharashtra has started showing its impact, as civic bodies have started imposing weekly water cuts. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to suspend water supply across the city every Thursday starting October 15.
PMC to also ban use of drinking water for construction purpose and initiate closure of vehicle washing centres till next monsoon.
“The State has received less rainfall due to the El Niño effect, and as the El Niño effect is expected to continue till next year, it is necessary to manage the available water storage economically and in a very well-planned manner,” read the PMC statement.
PMC’s decision comes after the state government’s Water Resources Department issued a Government Resolution on October 6 for micro-planning of the available water storage in the state, dam-wise and usage-wise, to secure the drinking water needs and to take preparatory measures to reduce the impact of a possible drought-like situation.
GR asks local administration to cut at least 10% of water usage and create awareness around water usage.
PMC has pointed out that in the Khadakwasla dam, which provides water to Pune, as of Monday (October 12, 2026), water storage is less compared to the available water storage every year.
PMC has appealed citizens to check and repair any leakages of taps, connections, flush tanks and leakages in pipelines at public toilets as well as private. Use of drinking water for private and public swimming pools as well as for private/PMC gardens should be stopped.
