HOUSTON, Texas — Oklahoma State showed plenty of fight Saturday night, but the Cowboys' furious second-half comeback wasn't enough to overcome a series of costly mistakes.
No. 18 Oklahoma State fell 35-32 to No. 20 Houston at TDECU Stadium, snapping its four-game winning streak and suffering its first Big 12 loss of the season.
The Cowboys trailed 14-3 at halftime before scoring 29 points over the final two quarters. Drew Mestemaker finished with 365 passing yards and three touchdowns, while Caleb Hawkins emerged as a major receiving threat.
However, defensive breakdowns, penalties and missed opportunities prevented Oklahoma State from completing the comeback.
Here are five takeaways from the Cowboys' first conference defeat.
1. Oklahoma State's Defense Couldn't Get Off the Field on Critical Downs
The most glaring problem for Oklahoma State was its inability to consistently stop Houston when it mattered most. The Cougars converted seven of 13 third-down opportunities and went a perfect 3-for-3 on fourth down.
Several of those conversions came on plays that dramatically shifted momentum. Houston quarterback Conner Weigman broke free for a 44-yard run on third down during the third quarter, setting up a touchdown pass to Amare Thomas on fourth down.
Earlier, the Cougars extended another possession with a fourth-down completion to Patrick Overmyer before eventually finding the end zone.
The defensive problems weren't limited to passing situations. Houston repeatedly found running room between the tackles, particularly in the first half, when Makhi Hughes helped the Cougars control possession and establish their offense.
Hughes had 67 rushing yards on 14 carries by halftime, while Houston finished with 162 rushing yards.
The Cowboys also surrendered several explosive passing plays, including gains of 51 yards to Thomas and 48 yards to Koby Young.
Perhaps the most frustrating sequence came on Houston's final possession. Trailing by three points, Oklahoma State needed one defensive stop to give Mestemaker another opportunity. Instead, Weigman connected with Trent Walker for 18 yards on third down, helping Houston run out the clock.
For a defense trying to compete in the Big 12 title race, allowing opponents to repeatedly extend drives is a problem that must be addressed.
2. Costly Penalties Disrupted Momentum on Both Sides of the Ball
Oklahoma State didn't help itself with several untimely penalties.
On defense, an illegal blindside block by Christian Bodner gave Houston a first down after an incompletion on the Cougars' opening possession of the second half. Houston capitalized on the extended opportunity, with Weigman connecting with Thomas for a 51-yard gain before eventually finding Trent Walker for a touchdown.
Later, defensive pass interference on Evan Jackson gave Houston another first down near the goal line.
Offensively, penalties repeatedly interrupted Oklahoma State's attempts to establish momentum.
A holding penalty on Oscar Hammond backed up the Cowboys near their own goal line to begin a third-quarter possession. A false start by Tyler Mercer disrupted another red-zone opportunity.
In the fourth quarter, holding on Shaun Torgeson erased a 24-yard reception by Hawkins, a play that would have added to an already outstanding receiving performance.
Oklahoma State also committed a delay-of-game penalty before an extra-point attempt following its final touchdown.
Not every penalty was equally consequential, and Houston committed its own mistakes. But the timing of Oklahoma State's infractions made an already difficult comeback even harder.
In a three-point loss, those missed opportunities and momentum swings deserve scrutiny.
3. Third-Down and Red-Zone Execution Remain Offensive Concerns
Oklahoma State's offense eventually produced 499 total yards and 32 points, but the final numbers don't tell the entire story.
The Cowboys struggled to finish drives early, particularly after moving the football into scoring position.
Following LaDainian Fields' opening-drive interception, Oklahoma State began at the Houston 48-yard line and advanced inside the 10 before settling for a 23-yard Sam Keltner field goal.
On its next possession, Mestemaker connected with Wyatt Young for a 54-yard gain to set up another promising opportunity. But the Cowboys failed to score after reaching the Houston 2-yard line, turning the ball over on downs when Mestemaker's fourth-down pass was broken up. Those two possessions produced just three points.
Oklahoma State also finished only 3-for-8 on third down and 1-for-2 on fourth down.
The Cowboys improved in the red zone as the game progressed, finishing 4-for-5 on scoring opportunities inside the Houston 20.
Still, the first-half failures were significant. Oklahoma State ultimately lost by three points, making those early missed scoring chances especially costly.
The Cowboys have demonstrated the ability to generate explosive plays, but sustaining drives and consistently converting scoring opportunities remain areas that need improvement.
4. Mestemaker and the Offense Found Their Rhythm Despite a Slow Start
For all the frustration surrounding the loss, Oklahoma State's offensive response after halftime was impressive. The Cowboys managed only 138 yards of total offense in the first half, including just 14 rushing yards. Mestemaker completed six of 15 passes for 124 yards and an interception before halftime as Houston's defensive pressure disrupted the passing game.
But the offense looked dramatically different after the break. Oklahoma State scored 29 second-half points, using more quarterback movement, explosive completions and timely contributions from multiple playmakers to stay within striking distance.
Mestemaker finished 22-of-34 for 365 yards and three touchdowns, extending his streak of 300-yard passing games to five consecutive contests.
He also made plays with his legs, including an 18-yard scramble that helped set up Ayo Adeyi's 13-yard touchdown run and a 29-yard fourth-quarter run that moved the Cowboys deep into Houston territory.
The performance wasn't flawless. Mestemaker threw an interception and lost two fumbles, with Houston's pass rush creating problems throughout the night.
Oklahoma State also struggled to establish a consistent traditional rushing attack, particularly early. But the Cowboys showed they could adjust offensively and respond when trailing against a ranked conference opponent.
The challenge moving forward is finding that rhythm earlier, rather than needing an 11-point halftime deficit to spark the offense.
5. Caleb Hawkins Became Oklahoma State's Most Dangerous Receiving Weapon
Houston entered Saturday with one of the nation's strongest rushing defenses, and Oklahoma State discovered early that running the football wouldn't come easily.
Hawkins had just nine rushing yards on six carries at halftime. Instead of disappearing from the offense, the running back became one of Mestemaker's most reliable receiving options.
Hawkins finished with seven receptions for 125 yards and a touchdown, adding 68 rushing yards on 17 carries. His 193 total yards from scrimmage were a major reason Oklahoma State remained competitive.
The biggest play came in the fourth quarter. With Houston leading 28-17, Mestemaker found Hawkins in space, and the running back raced 66 yards down the sideline for a touchdown. A successful two-point conversion to Justin Bowick cut the deficit to 28-25 and brought Oklahoma State within a field goal.
Hawkins also made an athletic 14-yard reception earlier in the second half, leaping over a defender to gain additional yardage.
His ability to catch passes out of the backfield, find space and create yards after the catch gave Oklahoma State another dimension when the traditional running game struggled.
A holding penalty also wiped out a 24-yard Hawkins reception in the fourth quarter, preventing him from adding to his receiving total and reaching an Oklahoma State single-game receiving record for a running back.
Even without that additional play, Hawkins delivered one of the Cowboys' most impactful individual performances of the night.
His versatility could become an increasingly important part of Eric Morris' offense, particularly against defenses determined to limit Oklahoma State's ground attack.
The Bottom Line
Oklahoma State proved it has the offensive firepower to compete in high-scoring Big 12 games. But Saturday's loss also exposed the problems that could prevent the Cowboys from reaching their conference championship goals.
The defense surrendered too many explosive plays and failed to make critical stops. Penalties interrupted momentum, while early red-zone struggles left points on the field.
At the same time, Mestemaker demonstrated his ability to respond to adversity, and Hawkins showed he can be a difference-maker even when rushing lanes are limited.
The Cowboys fall to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in Big 12 play.
With the four-game winning streak over, Oklahoma State's next challenge is turning those encouraging offensive adjustments into a more complete performance while addressing the mistakes that proved costly in Houston.
