Victor Matfield, widely considered among the greatest locks to have graced international rugby, has carried the discipline and ambition that defined his playing career into a formidable post-retirement financial portfolio.
As of 2025, the former Springbok captain's net worth stands at approximately R300 million, accumulated through decades of professional contracts, endorsement agreements, and strategic business involvement.
During his playing days, Matfield represented South Africa in more than 120 Test matches, placing him in elite company alongside Bryan Habana, Tendai Mtawarira, and current Springbok captain Siya Kolisi. He won the Rugby World Cup in 2007 and collected multiple Super Rugby and Currie Cup titles during a celebrated stint with the Bulls.
Since retiring in May 2016, Matfield has maintained a high profile as a pundit and analyst on SuperSport. He was part of the broadcast team on 5 September when South Africa defeated New Zealand 29-24 in the third Test of the Rugby Championship at FNB Stadium. Beyond television, he has offered line-out consultancy to provincial sides and advisory services to national teams.
His commercial partnerships, however, have contributed substantially to his wealth. A deal with Athletic Gear Co. between 2005 and 2012 brought in approximately R28.5 million, while an arrangement with Performance Sports from 2008 to 2015 added a further R38 million. A ten-year partnership with nutrition brand Health Essentials, running from 2010 to 2020, contributed around R19 million, and a collaboration with Global Fitness from 2012 to 2023 yielded an estimated R32.3 million.
On the corporate side, Matfield served as CEO of Wildswinkel Holdings and has remained active in business development, with previous sponsorship ties to Mitsubishi South Africa further cementing his commercial standing.
His asset base includes high-end residential properties across major South African cities valued at around R22.8 million, a luxury vehicle collection estimated at R5.7 million, and an annual allocation of approximately R1.9 million directed towards travel and exclusive international experiences.
Matfield has been married to Monja Bekker Matfield since 2003, and the couple is based in and around Pretoria, where he is reported to own premium property.
