ONGWEDIVA – The Tsumeb Super 12 U/17 Youth Football League has officially launched, providing young footballers with a platform to develop their talent, build discipline and teamwork, and pursue their sporting ambitions.
Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, Dino Ballotti, who launched the league earlier this week, said the initiative lays the foundation for a competition that could grow and become part of Tsumeb’s sporting landscape.
Ballotti emphasised the need to balance sport with academic performance, urging young players to take their education as seriously as their football careers.
“We want you to be great Namibians, so if you do not pass your grades, you will not play sports. The welfare of the learners is a collective responsibility,” he said.
He encouraged players to take their training seriously, avoid negative influences, and remain committed to their studies while pursuing their football ambitions.
“As you pursue your football goals, do not neglect your education. Give your education the same determination you give football,” he said.
Ballotti also emphasised the importance of investing in youth development, noting that resources, combined with a clear commitment, could help young athletes reach their potential.
He added that support for youth sport could provide essential equipment, facilities, coaching and other resources needed to create opportunities for young people.
Tsumeb Mayor Hofni Hamunyela said the launch opens doors for young people to explore their abilities, learn from one another, build confidence and understand the value of working together towards a common goal.
“Every champion must first learn discipline, and every successful team must learn to work together,” Hamunyela said.
He added that the league offers young players the opportunity to improve their skills and to demonstrate what dedication and commitment can achieve.
The competition is expected to contribute to youth development by encouraging teamwork, discipline and healthy competition, while giving aspiring footballers the opportunity to showcase their abilities.
The launch marks a step towards strengthening grassroots football in Tsumeb and creating opportunities for young players to develop on and off the field.
