General Motors has confirmed its new centralised computing architecture will be rolled out across the core of its range, including petrol-powered crossover SUVs and large body-on-frame SUVs and pickups.
When GM unveiled the system at last year's GM Forward event, it only confirmed it would debut in the Cadillac Escalade IQ in 2028. This year, the automaker named more names.
"We're bringing this next to mainstream parts of our portfolio," said Gary Cygan, GM's director of vehicle software and electronics engineering.
"Three-row gas [petrol-powered] crossovers – [Buick] Enclave, [GMC] Acadia, [Chevrolet] Traverse – full-size SUVs, light-duty trucks, and of course our next-gen [EV] platform."

While the Enclave, Acadia and Traverse crossover SUVs aren't sold in Australia – although the previous-generation Acadia was, as a Holden – GM does sell the Chevrolet Silverado pickup here and related GMC Yukon full-size SUV.
Today, most cars spread their processing across dozens of separate control modules, each looking after its own patch – brakes, steering, climate, and so on.
GM's new architecture replaces that with one liquid-cooled central computer that has about 40 times the capability of the outgoing system. Mr Cygan said that's roughly the equivalent of 35 laptops.
Aggregator boxes around the vehicle funnel data to that computer over high-speed Ethernet, and GM chief product officer Sterling Anderson said this cuts wiring by about 30 per cent while delivering up to 50 per cent faster cellular connectivity, for quicker downloads and more responsive connected services.
Mr Anderson was keen to point out how GM's approach differs from some rivals' 'zonal' systems, which still handle some processing out at the edges.
"You want your actuators to be effectively dumb," he said. "You want as little inference and compute happening at remote or satellite locations throughout your car, because you want to be able to optimise all of it together and update it much more rapidly than ever."
Mr Cygan added the new system is four times more power-efficient than the outgoing setup – an important detail for EV range.
The most interesting detail was how GM plans to keep the hardware current. GM is moving to what it calls a 'tick-tock' model, borrowed from consumer electronics.
"Every two years we will rev the electronics so that we can have the latest, greatest silicon," Mr Cygan said.
That cycle will be separate from the vehicle's own facelifts and updates, meaning a model could get a new computer mid-life without a broader redesign.
Don't expect to be able to upgrade the computer in your own car, though. Mr Cygan said GM looked at customer hardware upgrades "pretty seriously" a couple of years ago, but decided against it for now, instead building in extra processing headroom.
GM says it's already running pilot Escalade IQ builds with the system at its Milford proving ground, with around 180,000 software simulations run four times a day.
The American automaker currently sells the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Yukon Denali in Australia, both converted to right-hand drive locally.
Future generations of both nameplates fall into the segments GM named.
Beyond these models, GM also fields the Chevrolet Corvette, plus a range of electric SUVs under the Cadillac brand.
Australia also has the foundations for over-the-air software in place. Cadillac launched Connected Services locally in late 2025, with eight years of free connectivity and remote functions through its app. Whether that will be extended to GMSV models remains to be seen.
