Michael McDowell and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. turned the cool-down lap at Charlotte Motor Speedway into a personal grudge match on Sunday. During the 400-mile race, a prolonged struggle for position preceded the two drivers slamming into each other. It was messy, loud, and exactly the kind of chaos that makes racing fun to watch.
The tension didn’t start with the post-race bumper tag. According to Motorsport.com NASCAR Cup, the fight began during the final run of the race. The two drivers spent several laps dive-bombing one another and even hitting the wall while fighting for position. McDowell ended up with a 19th-place finish, while Stenhouse fell back to 23rd.
The post-race bumper tag
The real heat happened when the checkered flag had already waved. Stenhouse pursued McDowell on the cool-down lap, initiating door-slamming maneuvers against him. McDowell didn’t just sit there and take it. He returned the favor, and the situation escalated when Stenhouse brake-checked the Spire Motorsports driver. McDowell then targeted the right-rear of Stenhouse’s car and spun him up the track.
It was a wild scene. Even Riley Herbst had to lift his foot off the gas to avoid getting caught in the middle of the mess. Watching the chaos unfold was a trip for the people watching the broadcast. Per Motorsport.com NASCAR Cup, Brad Daugherty, who helps run Stenhouse’s Hyak Motorsports team, saw the fight live on the USA Sports show. He reacted to the madness by laughing and saying, “Hey, hold on, what in the world?”
No real damage done on pit road
Despite the heavy hitting on the track, the drivers seemed to cool off once they reached pit road. They parked their cars bumper-to-bumper and had a much more peaceful talk. Stenhouse even leaned into the window of McDowell’s car to settle things. No punches were thrown, and the anger seemed to fade quickly.
Daugherty even joked about the timing of the wreck, asking, “What are we doing? After the race! Oh no … don’t tear it up now!” It is a good thing they kept the peace in the pits. The race was already chaotic enough with other heavy wrecks, like the big crash involving Bubba Wallace, Alex Bowman, and William Byron. At least the Stenhouse and McDowell drama ended without anyone needing an ambulance.
