KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Waze on Thursday rejected Malaysia’s claims that it collects sensitive government information or allows any entity to exploit personal user data, after the government banned civil servants from using the navigation app, citing its Israeli connection.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s office in a statement Wednesday said the decision took into account the status of Waze Mobile Limited as a data controller incorporated in Israel and operating under Israeli law.
A Waze spokesman described the allegations of compromising personal data as “completely false.” He did not comment on any Israeli connections.
“Waze operates under strict privacy policies that protect user data and comply with global legal data protection standards,” the spokesman said, in a response to The Associated Press. Waze was developed in Israel before it was bought by U.S. tech company Google in 2013.
Predominantly Muslim Malaysia is a staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause and has no diplomatic or direct economic ties with Israel.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo told Parliament on Thursday that the ban on Waze applies only to public servants carrying out official duties.

The violent chess match between Kyiv and Moscow continues. Air defences are running thin as both sides shift their focus away from front lines rendered an automated kill zone by AI-powered weapons. Long-range Ukrainian drones are striking Russian oil refineries — the Kremlin’s cash cow. Russia is bludgeoning Ukrainian society by bombing its power grid, telecoms and residential areas.
A continent over, another battlefield is also heating up.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s chief of staff (and former spymaster) twice last month posted photos tacitly confirming what’s been an open secret for years — Ukrainian intelligence agents are supporting rebel groups in attacks on Russian military contractors on African soil.
CNN then reported Ukrainian operatives in northern Mali are schooling ethnic Tuareg separatists in drone warfare. “I co-ordinate their operations remotely,” said one Ukrainian agent. “The signal from their drone comes to me over the internet, and I immediately tell them via radio what to do and where to fly.” Insurgents from nearby countries have reportedly travelled to Mali to receive instruction, as well.

A Brandon man is taking a fellow hockey player and two sport organizations to court after he was seriously injured on the ice, alleging it caused him hardship and lost income.
In 2024, Devon Leblanc played for the Virden Oil Kings, a senior amateur team in the Tiger Hills Hockey League, which is a member of the Hockey Manitoba association.
Leblanc’s age is not made clear in the court filing, but an online roster suggests he’s 38.
Leblanc alleges Bryce Enns, a member of the Killarney Shamrocks, bodychecked and assaulted him during a game between the two teams on Nov. 28, 2024.
