The forecast, released at 3pm, placed the following counties on notice for rainfall: Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Kakamega, Kericho, Kisumu, Siaya, Vihiga, Nandi, Bomet, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Homa Bay, Busia, Nakuru, Embu, Narok, Meru, Nyeri, and Nyandarua.
Strong winds expected in northern counties
Separately, the department warned of strong southerly to southeasterly winds surpassing 25 knots (12.5 m/s) over sections of Turkana and Marsabit counties.
Residents and those travelling through the arid north were advised to take note of the potentially hazardous wind conditions.
County-by-county forecast
Across the counties detailed in the forecast table, tonight's conditions are largely partly cloudy, with morning bringing sunny intervals in most areas.
Temperatures are expected to range between a maximum of 25°C and 31°C and a minimum of 12°C to 21°C throughout the forecast period.
By afternoon, conditions are set to become more unsettled, with a mix of sunny intervals alongside the likelihood of light showers and thunderstorms over isolated locations.
Counties in western Kenya and the Lake Victoria basin, which are already receiving short rains, face the highest probability of afternoon thunderstorm activity.
The forecast covers a critical window in Kenya's short rains season, which typically runs from October through December and affects agricultural activity, road conditions, and daily livelihoods across much of the country. Residents in the affected counties are encouraged to make timely preparations, particularly those in low-lying or flood-prone areas.
