Community School of Naples 3, Marco Island 1: The Seahawks defeated Marco Island in the Region 2A-3 quarterfinal, advancing to the Region 2A-3 semifinals for the first time since 2020.
Community School (15-7) will host Canterbury in the regional semifinals on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 2 p.m.
“It means a lot to our school because this is the farthest we’ve gone,” senior captain Aniston Newman said. “It’s really special to win with these group of girls because they’re all so young and talented, they have so many more years and as seniors, Mia (Ringhofer and I) are just so grateful to be able to play with these girls.”
The Seahawks led for most of the opening set, but the Manta Rays remained close throughout. Community School went on to win 25-23, but the Manta Rays responded sharply in the second set. They jumped out to an early advantage and maintained their lead throughout, winning 25-20 to level the score at 1-1.
After the set, Aniston reminded her younger teammates that this is an opponent they’ve overcome before, with the Seahawks winning two out of their three matchups this season.
“We know how they play, where the ball goes and who they give it to. We know how to set up our defense and our offense, where to play the ball,” Aniston said. “(But) we needed to be smarter in our plays and work on our service a little more.”
The third set began closely contested, but a 5-0 run gave the hosts some breathing room as they opened up an 8-3 lead. The Seahawks maintained this cushion until midway through the set when an ace from sophomore Juliana Batelli capped a short run that brought the Manta Rays within two.
The Seahawks began to pull away, but the Manta Rays rallied late in the set, forcing a timeout from Community School trailing 22-20. The Manta Rays continued to battle, but the Seahawks sealed the set 25-21.
The fourth set began much like the third, with the two sides splitting the first six points evenly. But the Manta Rays soon fell behind and found themselves trailing 13-6 after a series of mistakes.
Marco Island refused to give up down the stretch, but the Seahawks’ resolve didn’t waver either as Community School wrapped the fourth set 25-17.
The Seahawks bounce back from their loss to First Baptist Academy on Oct. 15, securing their third win of the season over the Manta Rays after suffering their first loss of the season to them on Aug. 25.
“It basically showed how the program has developed throughout the year,” Community School volleyball coach Celio Camargo said, with assistant coach Patricia Daugherty providing translations.
"The work that we had put in prior to (this) game gave us confidence to keep going, even though we lost to a really great team… all of these experiences just help us grow, especially since we have four freshmen (on our roster). We’re a very young team, so these will help them grow physically but also mentally and emotionally.”
Mia Ringhofer had a team-high 18 kills and an ace, with strong support from Newman with 13 kills, three blocks and an ace as well. Sophomore Evangeline Modico had a team-high five aces, earning key points for the Seahawks to help secure the third and fourth set.
Marco Island Academy finishes its season with a 14-11 record, with the Manta Rays graduating three seniors in the fall.
"Our team has pushed through a lot of hardships, especially being a younger team," senior captain Sophia Ogdin said. "... we learned a lot this season, especially teaching the underclassmen as well how to be leaders and have leadership on and off the court.
"I hope they stay as a family and I hope they don't disconnect, that they lean on each other, especially when you're struggling."

Region 3A-3
Bishop Verot 3, Cardinal Newman 0: The Vikings won 25-12, 25-17, 25-17. Strong net play and a string of serving aces powered Bishop Verot to a Class 3A-Region 3 quarterfinal victory.
Caroline Hathaway set the tone for the Lady Vikings with an opening point kill. But early on, the Crusaders kept themselves in by matching Verot with net responses with kills from Imani Taylor and Caroline Mischke.
But the tenor changed when Chase Hathaway served up back-to-back aces for the Vikings, helping set up a 10-1 run, which included a four service aces from Hailey Printz.
“At every practice we work on hitting seams at a certain angle and trying to get the most aces we can,” said Bishop Verot head coach Christy Curtis.
Cardinal Newman looked bewildered on defense at the Vikings' passing and sets at the net forced a Crusader timeout with Bishop Verot up 8-2. A trio Carley Himschoot kills put aside any hopes of a second set comeback plus serving aces from Hathaway and the Vikings closed it out with a Printz kill.
Cardinal Newman came out for the third set more organized, running off three straight points before a Printz kill knotted the game at 3 apiece. Printz would end the match with seven kills, five aces and five blocks.
Curtis had praise for the effort at the net by Himschoot, Printz and Caroline Hathaway saying, “We work on that overpass ball and joust ball and we have competitions to see whose best at it and they’re always battling, they’re unbelievable up there.” Caroline Hathaway would finish the match with five kills, nine digs and two blocks.
That set Bishop Verot up for a mini-run of its own helped in part by a Samantha Till ace who was doing her part with 20 assists.
The Vikings steadily pulled away going on six-point run near the end of the match with another kill by Himschoot and a serving ace by Riley Hartley. With Bishop Verot up 24-17 and the Crusaders serving, Till set up Himschoot for her eighth and match-winning kill.
“This is a combination of our season coming together and we’re peaking at the right time,” said Curtis of the dominating win.
The Vikings will travel to Sarasota to face Cardinal Mooney in a semifinal on Saturday.
