New Zealand has given Formula 1 a world champion in Denny Hulme and a founder whose surname is still painted on the cars. What it has never given its current F1 driver is a chance to race at home. In January, the Race Of Champions brings the closest thing on offer to Wellington, and the Kiwi with the F1 seat isn’t on the entry list.
ROC Wellington runs on January 9-10, 2027, at Hnry Stadium, where organisers will rip up the turf and lay a temporary tarmac circuit. Nine drivers are confirmed on the official New Zealand driver list: Sebastian Vettel, Valtteri Bottas, David Coulthard, Travis Pastrana, Chaz Mostert, Will Brown, Brodie Kostecki, Hayden Paddon and “Mad Mike” Whiddett. ROC says the full line-up will be revealed in the run-up to the event.
Liam Lawson isn’t one of the nine. The Racing Bulls driver has said publicly that he likes the look of it and expects to be in New Zealand at that time of year, but he hasn’t committed and ROC hasn’t named him. That leaves the most obvious headline act for a first-ever New Zealand ROC still sitting outside the door.
The Nations Cup arithmetic
ROC is two competitions stacked across two nights. Saturday is the ROC Nations Cup, where drivers race as two-person national teams for the “Fastest Nation” title. Sunday is the individual event that crowns the Champion of Champions. Racing runs from 7pm to 10pm local time on both nights.
That Saturday format is where Lawson’s absence becomes a practical problem rather than a marketing one. At ROC Sydney 2025, Team New Zealand was Paddon and Louis Sharp, the youngest driver ever to enter the event. For Wellington, ROC’s own announcement of Whiddett’s entry says at least one additional team representing the host country will be added, with its drivers named before the event.
Count the confirmed Kiwis and you get two: a seven-time New Zealand rally champion and a drifter. ROC hasn’t said how they’ll be paired. If the host nation is fielding more than one team, it needs more than two local drivers, and there’s exactly one New Zealander currently holding an F1 race seat.
Why an F1 seat doesn’t buy a trophy here
Being the F1 driver in the building is a ticket-seller, not a guarantee. Everyone races identical cars, nobody gets a test programme, and the heats are short head-to-heads where a single sloppy launch or overcooked corner ends your night. Tyre warm-up, car feel and nerve under one-shot pressure count for more than outright pace.
The recent results bear that out. At Sydney, Sébastien Loeb beat Mostert to the individual title, and France won the Nations Cup final against Team Australia Supercars by 0.2 seconds in the deciding race. Pastrana, who’ll represent Team USA again, has come close to the individual crown several times and still hasn’t won it, according to ROC’s announcement of his return.
F1 drivers can absolutely master the format, but they tend to be the ones who’ve done the reps. ROC credits Vettel with the 2015 Champion of Champions title and seven Nations Cup wins. Coulthard is a two-time individual champion, most recently in Riyadh in 2018. Those two have been showing up for years.
The case for Lawson is that adapting at short notice has been his whole career. His F1 debut came at Zandvoort in 2023 as an emergency stand-in for an injured Daniel Ricciardo. This year, Red Bull called him up again to cover for Isack Hadjar, first at Monza and then in Madrid. A driver whose CV is built on jumping into unfamiliar machinery with no warning is exactly who ROC’s format suits. The counterpoint is that none of those cars were built to spin around a rugby pitch, and Whiddett has made a living out of going sideways in front of crowds.
Why the organisers want him more than he needs it
This isn’t a privately run exhibition with nothing riding on it. WellingtonNZ is delivering ROC as part of the region’s summer events programme, and the New Zealand Government is backing it through the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, according to the launch announcement. Public money wants full stands. Hnry Stadium seats 34,500, and single-day tickets start at NZ$49, with weekend passes from NZ$74.
Right now, the headliners are a retired four-time champion, a current Cadillac driver and three Supercars champions the Australian half of the Tasman already knows well. Brown, Kostecki and Mostert will arrive straight off a Supercars season that’s kept their names in the headlines. What a Wellington crowd will pay hardest to see is a Kiwi in F1 racing in Wellington, and only one person on the planet fits that description.
For Lawson, the calculation is different. The January dates fall in F1’s off-season, so there’s no clash with a Grand Prix weekend. The upside is a home crowd he’s never had in his day job. The downside is small but real: lose a heat to a drifter in front of a home stadium and you’ll be hearing about it for a while.
What to watch before January
- The next batch of names. ROC has promised more drivers from F1, NASCAR, Le Mans, World Rally and rallycross. Another F1 entry would sharpen the Lawson question.
- Team assignments. Who partners Paddon, and who forms the second host-nation team, will tell you how seriously ROC is chasing a home-grown win on Saturday.
- Bottas’s nation. He raced for Team Finland in Sydney. If a Finnish teammate is announced, he’ll be chasing a Nations Cup title in a competition where Vettel already has seven.
Until ROC publishes a name, Lawson’s entry is a maybe. The empty space on the host-nation team is not.
