Rangers International of Enugu’s Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Match Day 9 fixture against Bendel Insurance has been postponed to allow the Enugu-based club to concentrate on its CAF Champions League campaign.
The encounter, originally scheduled for Sunday, October 18, was moved following Rangers’ continental engagement against Algerian side MC Alger at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu. Blueprint reports
The match between Rangers and MC Alger is scheduled to kick off at 4 p.m. on Sunday, with the Flying Antelopes expected to draw on home support as they pursue a positive result against the North African visitors.
The postponement means Rangers will not feature in the domestic league this weekend as planned, while Bendel Insurance will also be without a competitive fixture until their next scheduled league outing.
The decision to postpone the fixture gives Rangers the opportunity to focus fully on their continental assignment without the demands of an additional domestic match competing for the team’s attention.
For Nigerian clubs participating in CAF competitions, the need to balance domestic league commitments with continental football often creates scheduling challenges, particularly when fixtures fall on the same day. Such adjustments are intended to accommodate clubs’ participation in international competitions while allowing them to fulfil their league obligations at a later date.
Bendel Insurance turn attention to Rivers United
With the Rangers fixture postponed, Bendel Insurance will now focus on their Match Day 10 encounter against Rivers United, scheduled for October 25.
The Benin Arsenals will host Rivers United as they seek to return to winning ways following their 2-1 defeat to Sporting Lagos in Lagos last Sunday.
The loss was a setback for Insurance, who had hoped to secure a positive result away from home. The defeat left the Benin club eighth on the NPFL table with 12 points, making their next league fixture important as they seek to improve their position.
Insurance will now have additional time to prepare for the Rivers United encounter, assess their performance against Sporting Lagos and work towards correcting the shortcomings that contributed to their defeat.
Playing at home could also provide the Benin side with an opportunity to regain momentum, although the outcome will depend on their performance against a Rivers United team that will equally be seeking a positive result.
The postponement, however, means Insurance must wait beyond this weekend to make their next attempt to increase their points tally. Their immediate task will be to use the available preparation period effectively ahead of the October 25 fixture.
Rangers prioritise continental assignment
For Rangers, attention is now firmly on MC Alger and the challenge of representing Nigeria in the CAF Champions League.
The encounter at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium offers the Enugu club an opportunity to make the most of home advantage against an Algerian opponent with continental experience.
Rangers will need to approach the fixture with discipline and concentration as they seek a result that strengthens their campaign. The team’s ability to manage the pressure of the occasion and execute its game plan will be important in determining the outcome.
The continental match also carries significance for Nigerian club football, with Rangers among the domestic sides seeking to make an impact beyond the NPFL. A positive performance would provide a boost for the club and its supporters as they follow the team’s progress in Africa.
Meanwhile, Bendel Insurance will continue their domestic campaign when Rivers United visit on October 25, while Rangers’ postponed league meeting with the Benin side will have to be played at a later date.
New date yet to be announced
No new date has been announced for the postponed Match Day 9 fixture between Rangers International and Bendel Insurance.
Both clubs will therefore have to await further communication from the relevant league authorities regarding when the encounter will be rescheduled.
Until then, Rangers’ immediate priority remains their CAF Champions League meeting with MC Alger, while Bendel Insurance will concentrate on preparations for their home fixture against Rivers United.
The rearranged match will provide both sides with another opportunity to pursue their respective league objectives once a new date is confirmed.
