Google is gutting free Gemini features, now I have every reason to ditch it

Although Gemini started as a chatbot that was perpetually playing catch-up, it has been practically useful for many Android users.

Even on the free tier, Gemini offered access to premium tools like multimodal capabilities that rival chatbots like ChatGPT, Copilot, and Alexa offer as paid add-ons.

But that has changed with Google's latest restructuring of its Gemini plans.

I don't want to sound like a Gemini hater, but with the crucial perks I enjoyed on the free tier gone, there's more reason to switch to rival AIs, and I think you should too.

What is changing

Google demotes non-paying users to Flash Lite

Google is now removing the Flash model from the free plan, limiting this to Google One Plus subscribers. Meanwhile, One Plus members will lose access to the Pro model.

Free-tier users will still get multimodal input and Gemini Live, but it is now strictly limited to the Flash Lite engine.

It is also unclear how it is presented on the free tier, which is now labeled Gemini Auto in the drop-down menu in the Gemini app on my Android phone.

Compared to Plus, you can choose between Flash and Flash Lite, while Pro members can toggle the Pro model as an extra option.

Even so, Google still lets all account types select reasoning grades of Low, Medium, and High.

That means I can switch to Medium for added depth in Gemini's answers, or pick High for more thorough responses.

It shows Google is at least making a generous effort for all users.

However, these adjustments aren't enough to sway me to keep using Gemini, or at least upgrade to the Plus or Pro plan if I were on a free account.

The only reason why I want to pay

Take note: Not for AI perks

Before Google segregated Gemini features, I relied on free access to Gemini for a considerable period.

Last year, I upgraded to Plus mainly because I needed more storage for my Google Workspace apps and media files.

I quickly upgraded to Pro because I needed more capacity for my sprawling photo library and high-res videos, especially since I started sharing the cloud space with my wife to back up her iPhone shots.

Gemini and its features weren't the main reason I became a paying subscriber.

I've found that many of these Gemini features, like image generation, are meaningless for my everyday use and workflow, except when I need to test a specific tool.

With Google starting to lock out several baseline utilities, I'm more convinced that those relying on the free tier should stick with their current setup.

Or entirely drop Gemini for an alternative chatbot.

I don't maximize Gemini Advanced

Flash Lite is already good enough for everyday tasks

I enjoyed Gemini as a conversational assistant on my Android device. It is handy for summarizing lengthy text, analyzing data, and controlling my smart home.

It also offers multimodal support even on the unpaid tier, letting you speak or input prompts alongside images.

The thing is, these are the exact utilities you could already get without spending a dime.

I use the Flash Lite model from time to time, especially when I need quick, repetitive answers, like checking the current exchange rate, requesting a description, or parsing a document or chart.

If there is a difference worth noticing, it comes down to app integrations and daily usage limits.

Then again, only power users who actively exploit them truly benefit from the paid tiers, such as artists who generate high-res clips or upscale media, or developers who need capable models for coding.

Even as a Pro subscriber, I rarely use Gemini's media creation tools, and I haven't even tried Flow for creating audio or short clips.

I tested Spark before, but I only kept it for a few recurring schedules that Gemini can't handle.

Google has made meaningful progress with its Flash and Flash Lite models over the past few years, to the point that the latter is as capable as full Flash in common tasks.

That holds true for most people, since Flash Lite provides more than enough firepower for what they need.

Because of that, it is hard to convince anyone to pay $5 or $10 for Plus, or $20 for Pro, when Lite alone works reliably.

Most subscribers will pay only to expand their tokens and usage limits, plus the incentive to access the advanced models and workspace connectors.

Rival chatbots continue to get better

Their free tiers have quietly caught up

That is not the only reason free-tier users have zero incentive to pay for Gemini.

Alternatives like ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, and Grok offer fast and expansive answers right out of the box.

These platforms have reached a point where their baseline capabilities are as competent as the paid releases from a few years ago.

While they may fall behind Gemini in certain multimodal tricks that non-paying users enjoy, their new models have improved significantly.

These upgrades eventually trickle down to free accounts, even if they arrive slightly late, meaning the no-cost versions remain sharp and can do the same work.

When you need to pay for Gemini

I think it's clear that users only need to pay for Gemini when they want the bundled perks and services that accompany the subscription.

For instance, Google includes more cloud storage for One Plus, up to 2TB, while the One Pro plan includes YouTube Premium Lite on top of a shareable 5TB storage.

Users can save money on these bundled plans with perks instead of buying each subscription separately.

That means many subscribers pay for Gemini not for the Flash models or higher token limit, but for the bundled storage.

If you rely on third-party cloud storage or have figured out you don't need these extras, there's no reason to hand your hard-earned bucks to Google, especially since Google is stripping core features even from paid tiers.
