South Sudan’s Senior Presidential Envoy on Special Programs, Adut Kiir, has expressed interest in exploring the development of the Fula hydropower project during talks with South Korea’s Korea Water Resources Corporation, K-water, in Seoul.
According to the Office of the Senior Presidential Envoy, Adut met with the president of K-water on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, to discuss potential cooperation in hydropower development and other water infrastructure projects.
The discussions highlighted the Fula Dam as a potential opportunity to expand South Sudan’s electricity generation capacity and support the country’s energy development ambitions.
Adut also explored possible partnerships in water supply, sanitation, flood mitigation and water treatment, including a proposal to extend clean water connections to at least 80 percent of Juba’s population and expand access to other parts of the country.
She called for potential support in developing water treatment plants and sewage systems to improve sanitation and help reduce waterborne diseases.
On flood management, the envoy emphasised the need for sustainable solutions to protect communities, farmers and agricultural production from recurring floods.
The meeting also explored technical cooperation, scholarships, exchange programmes and capacity-building initiatives to strengthen the expertise of South Sudanese professionals in water and infrastructure management.
K-water has experience in international water supply and infrastructure projects, including hydropower development in other countries.
The Office of the Senior Presidential Envoy says the engagement aims to explore international partnerships to support South Sudan’s energy development, water security, public health and sustainable infrastructure.
