On Sunday, October 25, Northern Hemisphere airlines will switch to winter schedules based on IATA slot seasons. Around that date, hundreds of new and returning routes will take off globally. Similarly, huge numbers of links will end, whether for the season or permanently.
The Airbus A380 is also affected. Compared to winter 2025/2026, OAG data shows that 18 routes will not see the double-decker quadjet in the upcoming season. They involve eight of the world's ten scheduled operators of the superjumbo, including the granddaddy of them all,
Emirates, which has removed three routes.
Emirates Will Not Fly The A380 From Dubai To Jeddah
Earlier this month, it was disclosed that the Gulf giant — which ch-aviation shows has 116 A380s in multiple different configurations — will no longer fly the equipment from its
Dubai International Airport (DXB) hub to the large Saudi coastal city of Jeddah, served through King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED).
This is a substantial change for various reasons. First, the type currently serves the route, which covers just 919 nautical miles (1,702 km) each way, three times daily. It is, therefore, among Emirates' most-served superjumbo markets. Second, the announcement of the equipment's removal only came a few weeks before the change will be implemented. Third, it was the carrier's shortest A380 service.

In winter 2026/2027, DXB-JED will be entirely served by the Boeing 777-300ER. The swap to the Boeing twinjet means that total round-trip seats for sale will drop by 102,000 this winter (-22%). On a percentage change basis only, first class will be by far the most impacted cabin (-63%), followed by business (-48%) and economy (-16%). The A380 is due to return on Sunday, March 28, 2027, which is when Emirates will switch to summer schedules.
Then There's Dubai To Washington Dulles
Usually, Emirates deploys the first-class-equipped double-decker from DXB to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) on a year-round basis. It is usually the airport's only superjumbo operator in the winter, but not so right now.
Due to the ongoing war in Iran, Flightradar24 shows that the type did not operate to the main international airport for the DC area in March, April, May, June, or July 2026. The type returned in August, presumably for peak season demand, but has not been deployed since. The 777-300ER has temporarily replaced it.

The equipment's return to IAD has been pushed back on various occasions. While subject to change, the latest information is that it won't be until March 28, 2027, that it is seen there again. In contrast, Houston is set to welcome the A380 back on November 1, 2026. When it is IAD's turn, the 489-seat configuration will be deployed. This layout has 14 seats in first class, 76 in business, none in premium economy, and 399 in economy.

What About Dubai To Medina?
The Saudi city of Medina (Madinah) is best known for pilgrimages, usually for Umrah but, at times, also for Hajj. Emirates very occasionally uses the A380 there to cater for the much higher demand when a big tour group books for Umrah reasons.
The airline flew the equipment there on three occasions in winter 2025/2026. Flights existed on November 20 and December 25, 2025, along with January 8, 2026. On all occasions, the two-class, 615-seat configuration, which is being removed, operated. No A380 service is currently scheduled for the upcoming winter, hence the inclusion in this article.
Emirates will continue to fly between DXB and Medina this winter, along with narrowbody little brother
flydubai and Saudia. The trio will collectively have up to five daily flights. Given the focus on pilgrims, it is hardly surprising that Emirates' top five markets for transit traffic to/from Medina are Pakistan, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Bangladesh.
