To say that Caleb Williams was extremely good in his Week 6 return to the Chicago Bears would be a fairly objective statement. A 30-of-36, 305-yard performance in which he operated closer to the level of a machine than a human earns you that bit of certainty.
In making history multiple ways — third quarterback ever with 50 touchdowns and fewer than 15 interceptions, highest completion percentage (83.3 percent) by a Bears quarterback with at least 30 attempts — Williams demonstrated that he was not only healthy, but in top form. Of course, there's always those pesky advanced stats that might have something further to say, regardless of what we may have witnessed with the eye test. His Pro Football Focus notwithstanding, as a 63.0 grade was tied for just 13th, the analytics do great work in further illustrating just how good Caleb Williams was on Sunday.
It's not as if the more surface-level numbers themselves didn't do enough of that. Williams' 30 completions were third among quarterbacks in Week 6 while his 305 yards ranked fourth. That completion percentage stood atop the league while his yards per attempt (8.5) ranked third. But the advanced stuff helps to solidify it all.
Williams' 12.8 completion percentage over expected also trailed only Houston's C.J. Stroud for tops in the league this past week. His overall EPA (+7.3) ranked fifth while his EPA per dropback (+0.18) was tied for the same place in the rankings. That he was able to do that with a pressure rate of 41.5 percent (fifth-highest) speaks to just how on he was on Sunday. When operating from a clean pocket, Williams was an obscene 24-of-24 for 248 yards. That's the most completions in a clean pocket at 100 percent completion percentage since at least 2018.
Notably, Williams had a scramble rate of just 2.4 percent, the lowest of his career. That feels worth a mention considering the types of throws we've become accustomed to seeing Williams make since the Bears selected him in 2024. He's certainly capable of making wild throws on the run, but there's something to be said for how he performed on Sunday when he was far less inclined to run considering the hamstring injury from which he's recovering.
It's exactly the type of performance we could've hoped to see from Williams coming off that injury. With a tough matchup against an upper tier defense in New England on Thursday, a return like that will, ideally, serve as a springboard toward having the type of year we all thought possible. Considering how well the advanced stats support what we saw in the box score, such a season seems entirely feasible moving forward.
