SHILLONG, OCT 22: The Meghalaya Sport Climbing and Mountaineering Association (MeSCMA) is sending two state trainees to the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), Darjeeling, for advanced training in mountaineering.
The trainees – Keliostar Pdai, Battalion Constable of 3rd MLP Battalion, and B Kyrmenskhem Lyngdoh, NCC cadet from Sankardev College – have been nominated to attend the Advance Mountaineering Course (AMC) to be held from 21st October to 17th November, 2026.
President of MeSCMA Malviancy Shabong said the sponsorship is part of the Association’s mission to promote adventure sports among youth and uniformed personnel.
“The training programme is being sponsored by MeSCMA as part of its continued commitment to promoting mountaineering, developing technical skills, and encouraging young people and personnel from Meghalaya,” Shabong said.
She said the Association wants to encourage more youth to take up adventure sports professionally.
According to MeSCMA, the AMC is the next level after Basic Mountaineering Course, meant for those who secure ‘A’ grade and want to hone their technical expertise.
“It generally involves several stages, including route planning, equipment preparation, load ferries, establishment of base camp and higher camps, acclimatisation, technical climbing, summit attempts, team coordination, leadership, physical fitness, and responsible decision-making,” the Association said.
MeSCMA said the initiative will help Meghalaya build its own mountaineering talent.
“Through this initiative, MeSCMA seeks to strengthen the mountaineering community in Meghalaya by supporting deserving trainees in acquiring professional training and technical expertise from the reputed national institution,” Shabong said, adding that the training will give them “technical knowledge, discipline, and confidence required to participate in mountaineering expeditions.”
