Kenyans using the Indian Ocean, including fishers and beachgoers, have been urged to exercise extreme caution as strong winds and rough seas are expected along the coast over the next seven days.
In its advisory on Friday, October 23, the Kenya Meteorological Service Authority said east-south-easterly to south-south-westerly winds would affect coastal waters, with speeds of 2 to 12 metres per second.
“Mariners, fishers, and other sea users are advised to exercise extreme caution, particularly in areas experiencing rough to very rough seas and strong winds,” Kenya Met said.
According to the Kenya Meteorological Service, sea conditions are expected to range from light to rough, with very rough seas possible in areas experiencing stronger winds and higher waves.

The warning comes as the country continues to experience sunny conditions in several areas, despite expectations of El Niño-related weather patterns towards the end of October.
Kenya Met has also been monitoring a tropical storm in the Indian Ocean that could trigger rains in the country, although its eventual impact will depend on the storm’s movement.
According to Kenya Met's seven-day marine forecast, wave heights along the coast and offshore waters could reach 3 metres on Saturday, October 24, creating potentially dangerous conditions for people operating boats and other vessels.
“Small boats and other vessels operating in exposed waters should take appropriate safety precautions and closely monitor official marine weather updates,” Kenya Met advised.
The forecast indicates that winds could strengthen significantly as days go by, with conditions varying from day to day depending on wind speeds and wave heights.
On Friday, October 23, wave heights inside the Indian Ocean are expected to range from 0.3 to 2 metres, before increasing to between 0.5 and 3 metres on Saturday.
On Sunday, October 25, the sea waves are forecast to reach between 0.5 and 2.5 metres, while Monday’s wave heights are expected to range from 0.25 to 2 metres.
According to Kenya Met's marine forecast map, the warning seems to also extend beyond Kenya, with the map indicating that neighbouring Somalia and Tanzania will experience similar wind conditions over their coast.
