(ANSA) - ROME, 22 OTT - A protest against surging gas prices and other issues has spread from the transport to the fishing sector and many vessels remain docked in Adriatic ports.
Sirens are sounding and fishing vessels remain docked in numerous Italian ports as part of a protest against high fuel costs and European policies that reduce the number of permitted fishing days while increasing the regulatory burden on businesses.
The mobilization—which originated spontaneously within fishing communities, with its epicenter in the Upper Adriatic—highlights a crisis that threatens the economic sustainability of the sector.
Confcooperative Agroalimentare e Pesca has provided an overview for ANSA of the situation across fishing communities in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, Marche, and Molise, and is calling for emergency measures to be discussed during today's meeting of the Council of Ministers.
The primary burden is the cost of fuel, which, in some instances, accounts for more than 60% of operating expenses.
