Steve Witkoff, US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, is scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin today.
Reuters reported early Wednesday, October 21, that the meeting will take place following talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
A US official described the discussions with the Ukrainian president in Norway as “constructive.”
The official said Ukraine presented new ideas and proposals during talks in Oslo, which were attended by the leaders of Norway and Finland, as well as representatives from Europe and NATO.
According to the official, participants made “meaningful progress” toward developing a coordinated approach to engaging with Russia.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the discussions covered “key elements of a comprehensive peace framework,” including security guarantees for Ukraine, a postwar economic plan, and a broader security architecture for Europe.
Meanwhile, Trump’s recent moves toward Moscow, including an agreement to purchase Russian diesel and exemptions from new sanctions, have faced opposition from lawmakers in both parties in the US Congress and raised concerns among European capitals.
